    I also use adguard through dns-over-tls when I am not at home where I use adguard in a home server.

    I have only a few lightbulbs and some temperature humidity sensors.

    I setup home assistant and I like it but I writing automations in yaml/the ui is not for me. It takes too long and feels like the wrong tool for this. I avoid python wherever I can, so I wrote my own service that listens to mqtt and automates things, writing instructions back to mqtt. It's basically a rust version of https://github.com/stapelberg/regelwerk But allows me to write automations in a proper language.

    I do love how easy it is to add new devices to HASS, so many integrations. So I still use it for that and for its dashboard.

    If the device supports mqtt directly I use that, otherwise I connect it to home assistant and use https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/mqtt_statestream/ to get events into the bus where I read them from my automation server. For example I have a few LE Bluetooth sensors that are supper easy to connect to HASS, from there events are published to mqtt where my automation server uses them.

    For zigbee devices I use zigbee2mqtt to do that.

    There are some glitches which is why I don't add anything else to this setup. Everything works but sometimes bluetooth loses connection to HASS, or zigbee2mqtt doesn't update the lightbulb state which means hass thinks the lightbulb is still off. It's kind of annoying because to fix this I'd have to go into the zigbee2mqtt's source and figure out what is wrong, which I don't want to waste time on.

  10. Firefox refuses to use fonts in ~user/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf

    I have the following on my fonts.conf <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd"> <fontconfig> <alias> <family>system-ui</family> <prefer> <family>FreeSans</family> </prefer>...

    I have the following on my fonts.conf

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
    <fontconfig>
      <alias>
        <family>system-ui</family>
        <prefer>
          <family>FreeSans</family>
        </prefer>
      </alias>
    </fontconfig>

    But when websites use font-family: system-ui firefox just ignores this and uses Cantarell anyway, which I don't even know where it is getting it from. (Not Firefox font preferences).

    Any idea how to make firefox respect my fonts.conf?

    This is Linux with i3.

    One of these pans will last your forever.
    The downside is you can't cook acidic foods in it, so I also have some stainless steel for that.
    Stainless steel can also be non stick but takes even more practice.

    I do also have some non stick to cook really delicate things like fish fillets with skin. I can't yet use carbon steel for that but I think I am almost there.

    I wash all my pans by hand. Maybe that helps with how long they last.

    Yes I get the accumulating ETFs in general, but then the stocks go up and down so the value of the ETF goes up and down. But with bonds, the underlying assets of the ETF should just go up unless the government/corp doesn't pay the bond back? I suppose it really is just betting on interest rates then, but then I don't really see the point, I could just buy some bonds and have some guaranteed return.

    I understand how distributing bond etfs could work, you get part of the coupons when the etf distributes profits, which compensates somewhat for the price changes of the etf. Interest rates would affect the price of the etf but that would be partly compensated by the distribution.

    But how does this work on accumulating etfs? If the profits are always reinvested in the fund, shouldn't the price of the fund always go up? Assuming all/most bonds dont default, interest rates would affect the price but that would be compensated by the reinvested profits?

    I am missing something here, dont see the point of a bond etf if the price can change so much.

    I think you are right I could do something like that. The thing is I feel this probably should have been solved already in a way that a non techie person should be able to use it and not go through so many hoops like hardlinks and whatnot. Thanks for the suggestion, I will try and use that while I don't have a working version of my idea.

    I am working on a daemon + android app to sync my music collection to my phone.

    My audio files are well organized on my laptop using beets But frustratingly there is no decent way to copy the music I want without using a cable or some shitty proprietary service. I like using syncthing to sync files but with syncthing I cannot select which folders/files I want to sync. I just want to be able to sync my files and use whatever player I want. I think syncing and playing audio are two different problems, and an app should not try to do both.

    Echoes of Software disenchantment come to mind, but I guess I am part of the problem too, so might as well get to work.

    I am using the opportunity to learn some more rust and finally try out kotlin. I don't like to work on client side things at all, but I think some of the skills are useful anyway.
