Just to add to this, I think one of the biggest differences between JSON and XML is the fact that XML is inherently a little more expressive, or at least it is in some cases easier to express some piece of data when you can leverage XML element attributes.

You are definitely free to represent whatever data you want to in either format, but with XML the added flexibility means that it’s harder to represent the structure in any given programming language. JSON is easy to represent in languages that have a hash or hash table or dictionary type, because they’re effectively the same thing. XML isn’t that simple.

in the vast majority of cases I don’t find the extra flexibility and expressiveness of XML to be particularly helpful. The increased difficulty of parsing and construction of XML in any given programming language is a non trivial hurdle.

Now that I’ve written a couple paragraphs and have successfully held my tongue for the most part, I’d like to say that I genuinely despise XML.

I’m a little more sympathetic to the whitelist/blacklist change, because it’s actually more descriptive, and the justification for one being the positive and the other being the negative is arbitrary.

I don’t think “blackouts” fits here - blackouts are a literal description of what happens when the power goes out, everything goes black.

That said, this is the first I’ve heard of any attempts to stop using blackout.

Ah I see what you mean. Yeah presumably it would be an infected on-network computer? Doesn’t seem too far fetched to me. But now that this is debunked it’s entirely an academic question.

This story is likely false (see other comments), but to answer your question, port forwarding is a feature for forwarding incoming traffic to a specific device and port. Outgoing traffic is just… outgoing internet traffic, any device is normally free to do so. The botnet only needs the ability to send outgoing requests.

level1techs makes KVMs that are highly rated and have super good support, at least as far as I’ve heard. They are not cheap, though.

I have trouble getting Copilot to generate multi-line completions at all. Not sure if this is a consequence of using it in neovim and not first-class VSCode. Either way, the value I see in Copilot is in highly repetitive, nuanced text editing tasks. It's really great at picking up on patterns after only one or two examples and it almost certainly makes fewer mistakes than if I were to copy/paste and modify. I don't find it particularly difficult to scrutinize what it outputs, as it produces it.

I don't think I would be significantly less productive if I didn't have it, but I certainly find it easier to keep my brain focused on the higher-level task I'm trying to accomplish when I can leave some of the editor-heavy grunt work to the robot behind the curtain.

All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling (1994) is no-longer-lost cassette album by post-rock artist Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The Wikipedia article goes into detail, but the gist is that there were 33 copies made and the band chose to never release it beyond that initial run. They more or less did not acknowledge it afterwards. 20ish years after its release it became clear that someone had leaked a portion of the record, but it was hard to confirm. Then last year someone leaked the full thing, and people were more sure about it being legit this time. It prompted the artist to release it for real on Bandcamp.

Creatively/emotionally, it seems a little disappointing, because clearly they didn’t want to release it and were essentially forced to - but I am sympathetic to the chase for something that was technically “released” even if in such a small quantity.

I use Antlion Modmic microphones with my normal headphones. I’ve owned both their wired and wireless microphones and they all sound way better than Zoom or whatever will transmit. They sell wired mics that use USB or 3.5mm. You’d have to buy a headset if you didn’t already have one to attach the mic to, though.
