Netflix still has the rights, and I’m not sure anything has been announced since Max canceled it in May and sold the rights, so there is still light at the end of the tunnel! Glad you liked it.

I like Tom a lot, but the meat-to-banter ratio of this is just too heavy on banter for my tastes. And I like banter! Made worse by how willing everyone is to talk at the same time as someone else.

Requiring anyone (especially small businesses) who want to physically display prices, to have to-the-cent accurate prices, when tax varies (slightly) by postal code, is really an unfair ask.

If the move then, is to make taxes more uniform across larger areas, and then add the requirement, then great. But I don’t know how likely that is to ever happen.

very simple and universal piece of legislation

    We’re talking the US here… so…

"Scavengers Reign" eluded me when it released last year, but I was made aware of it after MAX canceled the show in May (Netflix has since picked it up but may or may not put in for more, is how I understand the situation).

The trailer has been posted here but I wanted to check in and see how everyone else felt about it (keep it spoiler free!). Personally I was enthralled all the way through. It has such an interesting blend of Miyazaki-esque "creature-y" world building with more meditative displays of nature and the violence and balance that is integral to it. If that sounds at all interesting I would suggest watching the first of twelve episodes, you will probably know if you are interested or not after it's over.

Here's hoping Netflix green lights more, assuming the creators want to continue. It really could stand as-is with where they left it.

To be clear, the Higgs field gives all of the elementary particles mass. My understanding is that it’s not the way to give particles mass, it’s just the one that happens to be the case for most of the particles that do have it, and we don’t yet know how neutrinos get their mass.

The Higgs boson is a quantum particle in the Higgs field.

If I can be honest here, I have literally no idea what the new title is trying to say beyond what the original title did.

Edit: OK got it now, it seems pretty clear so I’m not sure what the roadblock was. I’m all for “their” as the de facto gender neutral pronoun but maybe this is one of the situations where the ambiguity doesn’t help.

Just to add to this, I think one of the biggest differences between JSON and XML is the fact that XML is inherently a little more expressive, or at least it is in some cases easier to express some piece of data when you can leverage XML element attributes.

You are definitely free to represent whatever data you want to in either format, but with XML the added flexibility means that it’s harder to represent the structure in any given programming language. JSON is easy to represent in languages that have a hash or hash table or dictionary type, because they’re effectively the same thing. XML isn’t that simple.

in the vast majority of cases I don’t find the extra flexibility and expressiveness of XML to be particularly helpful. The increased difficulty of parsing and construction of XML in any given programming language is a non trivial hurdle.

Now that I’ve written a couple paragraphs and have successfully held my tongue for the most part, I’d like to say that I genuinely despise XML.

I’m a little more sympathetic to the whitelist/blacklist change, because it’s actually more descriptive, and the justification for one being the positive and the other being the negative is arbitrary.

I don’t think “blackouts” fits here - blackouts are a literal description of what happens when the power goes out, everything goes black.

That said, this is the first I’ve heard of any attempts to stop using blackout.
