I used to be involved in the Runescape private server community - never to a huge extent, but I worked for one of the larger servers in high school to get some side cash. The problems between WoW servers and RS servers are definitely the same - there were so many carbon-copy servers where it was clear the owner had no idea what they were doing and had no idea how to program.

The server I worked on also was quite expensive to run from what I had heard - since we were popular, we were frequently DDoSed and as such had to pay a lot for protection. The server owners are usually also pretty unreliable, in my experience. They're either high schoolers like I was, or adults who didn't have (or didn't want) better opportunities than running a private server. If I recall, the owner of the server I was a part of got too addicted to coke to really keep up managing the server and that's how it eventually fell apart.

I love a good font writeup! I've been looking to find a new font just to switch things up, and honestly 0xProto seems very interesting. I'll have to give it a whirl :)

I got a lab-grown diamond from a local jeweler's, and they were very helpful in showing me different options and bands.

Another benefit is it requires a base level of competence from private companies who want to offer a better service. I'd be that if the USPS offered postal banking without overdraft fees (just for example) consumer banks would lose that pretty quickly.

I agree with the parent comment too that email/the Internet in general was a missed opportunity for the USPS.

I love The Dick Van Dyke Show as well, and if I'm in the mood for something a lil campier I'll go for Hogan's Heroes.

I love Half Acre! Their taproom is within walking distance of my apartment so it's a nice stop on a hot day.

Hey hello, also a Reddit expat but I've been browsing here for several years at this point - just now finally decided to get an invite!

Primarily interested in video games & software dev (frontend focused), but I'm also interested in architecture, infrastructure (bikes + trains) and history.

    • I'm currently reading through (a) biography of every U.S. president in order, currently on Zachary Taylor (#12).
    • I'm training for a marathon in September, completed a half-marathon a couple weeks ago (1:48:48)
    • Been playing a silly amount of Tears of the Kingdom
    • I live in Chicago, and work at a tech company there (based in Chicago, but remote these days).

And Oberon is always a go-to, living in the Midwest and all, but it's definitely so much better on tap with an orange slice than from a can.

I think this is through-line of the article for me. Really cool article and I also love to read about actually decent bike infrastructure in the US!

“One of the things smart cities are doing is not drawing a distinction between riding a bike for transportation purpose and a recreational one,” says Darren Flusche, a senior planner for transportation consultancy Toole Design. “What it boils down to is having a well-connected transportation network, and if you are distinguishing how it is used, you are missing the point.”
