This video essay talks about different types of difficulty that propel games forwards, as an interactive medium. It is by no means definitive and invites discussion, and I have really enjoyed it (I tend to enjoy Adam Millard's essays), so I decided to share it here as well :)

The youtube comments also talk about emotional difficulty, mostly pointing to horror games, which is definitely interesting to think about and maybe not what I would expect with emotional difficulty. I imagined maybe something about making difficult choices, or narrative-heavy games that deal with emotions and relationships between people under that term.

I use vim on remote servers or on my machine to edit single files. I, however, use it in a very basic sense, I do not use any vim motions. I enter edit mode, I change what I need to change, exit edit mode and save and quit, that's it.

Recently, I've been looking for alternatives to Visual Studio Code as Microsoft is starting to push Copilot very heavily and while I could use a cleaned up fork, the other concern is with more and more essential extensions becoming closed source and subject to Microsoft's licensing. And vim is a text editor that pops up over and over when I ask for recommendations.

A few days ago I've listened to No Boilerplate's Writing at the Speed of Thought which brings up a point about vim and vim motions being designed around the human body and how "editing by letters is extremely unnatural ... [and] extremely ill-suited to our nature".
That just doesn't sit well with me and may be the reason why vim never fully clicked with me. For context, I've been using computers in some capacity since a very early age, so perhaps the 'unnatural' way I've learned is so ingrained that I just can't make the switch, maybe I just think about things in a way that is more computer-centric just due to that as well.

I am still on my quest to replace VSCode and I would love to make a switch to something that's less attached to a single corporation that can pull the rug from under me at any time. A part of that quest I guess turned out to be trying to understand vim and maybe finally making it click for me, so I turn to the wonderful community of Tildes for help :)

    Thank you

The ambiguity alone really puts me off anyway. Not really sure what to do though, probably look for a Firefox fork or another Gecko-based browser

I am genuinely not sure if I would call a program you can install and that would continue working if the company shut down today, a "service".

It's.. fine? I have admittedly not dug too deep into any of the features save for using the default Lens a couple of times. Maybe I am using it wrong but I don't really see what's the big deal all about or if I would start paying for it myself.

Maybe someone could quickly explain how exactly can I get Kagi to be that much better or how to unlock its full potential because right now it just seems about on par with DDG.

An evolution on a previous name (Ravenheart), which was a song from my favourite band at the time.

I changed it to Valravn because I wanted something a little less “edgy” and also sometimes ran into someone who already had the name, but then I kept getting comments like “oh, I love that roller coaster too!”) so I adjusted it slightly, to hopefully still make sense.

I am not even Danish, but a few years after changing my nickname, I did move pretty close :)

When I first saw your name, I did a double-take.. Could it be the Simone? Still fun to bump into another Epica fan online though :)

Cheating is only a problem because the stakes are high, with global ladders and “prestige” tied to it.

Smaller server/lobbies can self-moderate way more effectively and the incentive to cheat is lower as well.

She seems to be able to forge her own path, explore music, not get tied down to a single genre. She imho has a lot of great music even if the metal tracks are my favourite :)

I have been using NixOS as a daily driver for a bit over 6 months now, I used a lot of other distros in the past from the more vanilla Ubuntu, through Arch to some of the more different ones like Fedora Silverblue.

A coworker told me about it and linked the NixOS: Everything Everywhere All At Once video by No Boilerplate and also the aforementioned Vimjoyer and I fell in love with the idea.

I use it for everything: Browsing the internet, gaming, and some coding - mostly Python and some C++. I actually cheat a bit due to how special some of my things are. I really like a lot of the concepts NixOS has, but I don't really have the time of day to learn all these new paradigms so I have some pet containers with Distrobox.

All-in-all, if you do more than just some basic stuff (and I would include gaming on Steam under basic stuff) there is some learning curve to it and it can be quite daunting. One more thing that I think I would recommend, aside from the things others have recommended, and it's a habit I picked up while using Silverblue, would be using Flatpaks. They get you far and are hassle-free.

I have been thinking about this recently and definitely have been annoyed at some of the sharper edges, especially when it comes to programming or running programs that aren't in the Nix or Flatpak repositories.

I love NixOS, and I am probably going to switch to something more "vanilla" again.
