Anyone interested in trying out Kagi?
Edit: I have sent my link to three different people and I am out. Assuming they sign up. However, a lot of people also have invite links that commented. I guess a system would be for the invite-giver to reply to the comment of the invite-receiver to keep track?

I received a link during Thanksgiving that lets me invite several people to a free trial of Kagi.
I tried convincing friends to try it out but most of them were not even interested in a free trial to a paid search engine.
If any of you are interested, please let me know.
I'll give you my link in private and you can register yourself to the free trial.
Posting just in case people are on the same boat as me.

Also, I hope it's appropriate to start a topic on this?
Let me know if this is frowned upon.
For people that have been using Kagi, what's been the killer app so far? Research for things that have fallen out of the zeitgeist? Searches for things that commonly get filtered out of normal engines thanks to DMCA requests? Media searches for things that aren't AI slop?
Kagi itself is the killer app, tbh.
I was critical of them in the past and actually cancelled my subscription, but I ended up resubbing simply because their results, even on searches with no customization, are way better.
Going back to DDG and even Google for a few months helped me realize just how much garbage there is on the internet, and both Google and DDG seemed to love serving it up to me all the time.
Kagi doesn’t make that a habit, and when it occasionally does serve up junk, it also gives me the tools to be able to fix that myself.
I see Kagi as being like the water filter on my kitchen tap. It’s more expensive than just using the water that’s already there, but it’s filtering out a lot of junk and leaving me with what I actually want.
Agree, I’ve also spoken positively [1][2] about Kagi on here before, and on more than just those two occasions.
In addition to what you said: bangs are a must-have in my search now, and probably will be forever. DuckDuckGo invented it, but Kagi perfected them. Including not only custom bangs, but also a community repo so you can expand on them for others to profit and all that good stuff. They even have
!tildes
. :PEdit, bangs have of course been mentioned already in the thread :-)
For me, it's the use of lenses, and being able to boost/deprecate search results based on domain. No longer does Pinterest pollute my feed with nondownloadable images, for example.
It does take a while to get used to the Kagi way of searching, but it is well worth it. The times I have to switch back to Google to get something has dropped to just a few percent, nowadays.
Personalized results where you can pin, boost, down rank, or block websites is the killer feature for me: https://help.kagi.com/kagi/features/website-info-personalized-results.html
It's a game changer being able to easily adjust the search algorithm to my liking!
(I also like being able to get LLM summaries of the top few search results, but only when I specifically ask for it. It's not constantly shoved in my face. It's just another optional tool to make searching and summarizing easier.)
Personalized searches are my killer feature. Being able block blogspam and downrank hacker news/fandom wikis is invaluable.
Out of curiosity, why do you down rank hacker news?
In my experience, situations like these are pretty representative of how HN behaves when queerness happens to crop up in conversation, and I was tired of being ambushed by it.
I also found myself disinterested in the way technical conversations would tend to unfold if they were either at all controversial (systemd, Rust) or if they were the hot-button tech craze of the week with tons of funding behind it (Crypto, NFT's, or AI.)
Also, somewhat related to the above two points, I find Hacker News to be much more eager to downvote/flag as a means of disagreement than Reddit.
As others have said, being able to boost/pin/block websites. You know those websites that have crazy good SEO but all of their articles are either LLM written terribleness, or previously human written terribleness? I used to get those in pretty much every search I did (doesn’t matter if it was duck duck go, Google, bing, or another engine). Kagi started out somewhat better than the others. Every time I see one I block it. After like a week of this, they were almost completely gone. Now I see them maybe once or twice a month, and add them to the block list. Absolutely fantastic.
Another decent feature is they can treat listicles separately. You know the articles “top 10 places to visit” or some other random crap? They can show up as normal results, or in a single section compressed, or be removed from the results entirely.
Another underappreciated aspect of it is how frictionless they made boosting or downgrading domains. Instead of having to add and remove domains on a separate blacklist or whitelist (which is how I previously curated my Google results via browser add-ons), you just click a button on the search result itself.
I have found this extremely helpful for when I'm digging deep into some specific topic and I want to limit my results to just a few websites that have the information I'm after. I can temporarily pin just those websites until I've collected all the information I'm after.
I am a habitual researcher — I make spreadsheets when I am circling a large purchase or planning out a hobby project — and Kagi has made that process so much smoother and more fun.
To add something not others have added, Kagi can do rewrites. If you're using nitter/xcancel, old.reddit, BreezeWiki you can make Kagi always rewrite results to those domains. If you get AMP search results (which my region doesn't in Google), you can rewrite them to the non-AMP version. They appears in the same position as the original site.
Bang is also a killer feature if you're coming from Google. Kagi do support custom bangs which I use for game wikis that I use. For example !runescape goes to the RuneScape wiki in DDG, but I also have !rs since I used it often. I also have !bs that goes to Brighter Shores wiki which DDG bang do not exists yet. Bangs do not count against your Kagi search quota and the response time is quite fast.
I didn't even know about the rewrite feature, that is awesome. Thanks for mentioning it.. I'm off to set some up! :)
Being able to weight domains in search results. I block domains, I increase and decrease the "priority" given to others. Super helpful because I look up music and tech stuff a lot and certain domains are ones I always want to hit first (bandcamp, encyclopedia metallum, etc) so it's nice to be able to tailor results myself rather than leave it all to the algorithm. I then block other ones that are just garbage or things I don't want to support (fandom wikis, etc). Other customization, like CSS theming.
Lenses
So much less SEO blogspam / low quality results. I often get to what I want much easier and faster.
I never thought I'd pay for a search engine, but even now, when I am really conserving budget, it's one of the things I did not cut. Honestly for my specific use cases, the results are so much better that I can't see going back to anything else.
Yes they have AI but it's optional and most (if not all) of it is opt-in. Was able to ensure no "overviews/summaries" were in my results, it's a simple option toggle in settings. They've also been pretty open about how they feel about AI and that they're implementing it a bit more carefully. While I'd prefer the company avoid AI altogether, at least they seem to be more reasonable about it and not shoving it down everyone's throat like Google, etc. They've started using it for their new Translation service (an alternative to Google Translate) and so on.
I pay money, receive service. It's forgettable, which is a good thing. I don't need to worry about "who's the real customer" and such.
I really like that default searches are actually “international” (non-localized to my country of residence), but I’m able to filter a search on a specific country. Also filter on a time frame, I use “last year” quite a lot.
There are country specific bangs too! I frequently use
!es
and!jp
when searching. They can also be combined with the image bang to get results from a specific country like猫 !jp !i
orgatos !es !i
for example. This is actually configurable too, so you can set it to your country specifically by default if you prefer that -- especially useful if your country has the same principle language as another with a bigger internet presence. International mode is also a good balance in my experience!
I use it to summarize long videos and long articles. I have a bookmarklet that I click on to summarize whatever I am looking at.
I got those three invites too, so if you're interested, just reply. It sounds silly to pay for a search engine in a post-google world, but trust me, Kagi is so much better it's honestly embarrassing for Google
Edit: Gave my three invites away!
I'd be willing to try it!Got it, thanks!

Got one already, thanks though!

Received, thank you very much!
Well I guess the system I ended up with is to just comment to whom I sent invites to that way the others could keep track.
Pinging @Arbybear and @GodzillasPencil so you’re in the loop:)
I'd be interested in a code if anyone still has one to use.
As an aside, I see a lot of people saying that one of their favorite things about Kagi is being able to exclude some domains and boost others. I can't do anything about the boosts, but I have been using the Firefox extension uBlacklist that lets you add domain filters for search engines and it just removes them from the result. This isn't as good as Kagi, but it let me get rid of the more annoying SEO farms as well as paywalled sites that may as well not exist when I am searching.
I used to use that add-on as well. I think you will like Kagi a lot based on that. I'll send you my spare code.
Thanks!
Does the trial require a credit card?
EDIT: Well, if it doesn't, and there are 8 or fewer other people interested (seeing that 9 invites appear to be on offer), I'm happy to give it a try!
Sent!
Same - if it doesn't require a card, I'm interested!
Sent a link
I have two invites remaining, DM mefresh outAnyone interested in posting their lenses? Always interested in what people are cooking up.
Bonus points for pirates.
The Kagi Discord server has a running discussion for this: https://discord.com/channels/1256077108111868035/1296873055204675684
I also have 3 invites that I’m happy to share. Let me know and I’ll give you one.
May I have one please?
Sent it to you.
May I have a link please?
Sent it to you.
I'd like one if you still have them.
Just sent it.
I am quite intrigued, I'd love to try if anybody has invites to burn! It seems like a decent effort, and perhaps the thing to get me to ditch Google.
Invite sent!
I'd be interested to try it, if you still have invites to spare?
Sent!
I'd very much like to give it a try!
I sent you a link.
I'd be up for a free trial. Never really thought about it but this could be handy for some uni searches.

I’m pretty happy with searx.be after I set it up to search DuckDuckGo, Google and Bing.
I would be very interested! It’s out of my price zone, but I’d be interested to see if it’s really as good as everyone says.
Sent you one
I think I have two left, please reply if you picked it up:
edit: gone
Got 1, thank you!
Got the other one, thank you!

I'm late! I've been reading about people using kagi for a while now. I'd be interested if anyone still has an invite left.

Thank you! I appreciate it.
Sure, could you DM me a link?

Could be interesting, I'll try if you still have spare invites.

Thanks!
I'll try it if you could spare one invite.

Thank you.
For other people - you don't input credit card info. Also the invitation email from Kagi (after setting up the account) is really short and on point.
The first impressions are positive. Nowlet's go searching!
I've been curious, if invites are still available.
Invite sent
Sounds like these are going fast but I’m curious to try if there are any left!

I'll try any new tech thing.

In case anyone else with free invites stumbles upon this thread, I'm interested too.
Invite sent.
I'd like to give it a whirl, if any invites remain!
I've been on the fence for awhile, but a least restrictive trial might be the final test I need.
Invite sent, not sure how many have been used. Hopefully you're good.
Was, TY!
If there are still any invites available I'm totally down to try it.
Sent.
Thanks!
How does the free trial work? Anyone can sign up for 100 free searches before subscribing to a paid plan. Does the trial-by-invite add more searches onto this?
It's 3 months of Kagi (likely the lowest-tier plan with 300 searches per month).
One of my invitees said it’s 3 months of unlimited searches
Thanks for the info!
I'm definitely up for trying it, if anyone has any invites left.Edit: Apparently you can only use the invite on a newly created account. (I'm still working through my 100 free searches, since I only use them for something I really want to find that the free search engines aren't helping with.) Thanks anyway, @Minori!Sent!
I'd like to try, if any invites remain. Not sure if you may have at all, haha.

Google and DuckDuckGo have really failed to meet expectations these days, it's quite upsetting!

Thank you! Signed up, let's see how it goes!
I too have codes for three people. Send me a DM or reply to this comment and I'll send it your way.
If you still have some left, I would be interested to try it out.
Still have one?
I also have 3 codes to gift if anyone would like one :)
Please DM if the codes are still available. Thanks in advance.
Enjoy :)

Anyone have an extra invite? These comments have convinced me to finally give it a shot.

I'm into it! I'm on Proton for most things and would love to round out my internet tools with a proper browser, too
Sent!
You're a damn hero - thank you!
Kind of, I do use Orion and somewhat curious about Kagi but I can’t justify paying its yearly price, when I also have a Proton Ultimate sub going as well.
Sent!
People who have a currently going kagi sub, how many other subs do you guys have?
Three: Spotify, Kagi, and Google Drive
Anyone have any idea why Kagi is so broken for me? I registered for a free trial, like, ten minutes ago.
That looks like what happens if you turn on the new "debug translations" feature ... It's weird that that'd be on without you manually turning it on though.
Still, nonetheless, as a first step you could make sure your interface language (second from the top) and this debug setting (at the bottom) are correct in the general settings page.
Thank you!
Nope, never seen that. Are you using a weird browser or using any addons that might be blocking some javascript or something like that?
First I've heard of this. If anyone has an extra invite burning a hole in their pocket, I'd like to give it a whirl.

Grazie mille!
I’ll take an invite if there are any remaining from someone.

Thank you!
Would like to try it out too if anyone still has an invite :)

Posting here to not start a new thread but
Day 1: 7 searches
Day 2 : 36 searches
Definitely don’t think I’ll be able to get away with a normal account if I do keep going after the trial ends.
In my opinion, if you default all your searches to Kagi you need the $10 plan.
Up to now I’m happy with the $5 one because i only use Kagi for non-trivial searches. Most of my searches are so easy that any search engine would do, like typing a website’s name to get to it.
So I default to a free engine (Google or DDG for example), and configure my browser to use Kagi if I start with “k “. Of course it means I need to think of adding that whenever I’m about to search something that isn’t stupidly easy to find.
Yeah I can try splitting them, especially if a lot of the time I end up on older reddit posts giving me the answers anyway.
I thought so too at first but I have been on the 300 plan for over a year now and don't even use all my searches. I think I formed better habits by using bangs more and going directly to the site using the browsers autocomplete. Of course that won't work for anyone depending on use, but I do think the general quality of the service makes the number of searches you need to make lower than normal.
I'm pretty late to this party but would love to give it a shot if anyone has any left
Sent!
Got it, thanks!
I would happily accept an invite. I'm Brazilian and Kagi is too expensive here so I make a new account when I reach the free limit.
Invite sent.
Thanks!
This whole thread made me quite curious. I must admit that I would love to try Kagi, too. Is there any invite left that I could ask for?
Thanks in advance
Sent! (was my last one, if the 2 others actually used the one I've sent)
As someone who doesn’t know at all, what exactly is Kagi and what service does it provide?
Search engine with user-customizable rankings that's better than any other search engine, in my opinion.
