When I was in your position a few years ago I asked a couple female friends if they wanted to do a Queer Eye clothes shopping day with me, with that agreement that I’ll commit to buy whatever they say looks good on me. It was a great success; everyone had a lot of fun and I now have a few nice, matching outfits that I would have been completely incapable of selecting on my own.

Much of infra engineering these days is picking the right stack of tools and making them connect together smoothly and reliably. If you find yourself writing a solution from scratch, there’s a good chance there’s an existing app or framework that already exists that does it better - use that instead. It’s the only way to move fast and efficiently. Once you’re working for a company you’ll also have to balance the choice of build vs buy for many of these components, and that choice changes based on current company scale and many other factors.

Absolutely, this entrepreneurial experience sounds way more valuable than most any summer job! When I was into turning I used a makers space - a subscription to one of those could be an alternative option to buying if there’s one nearby. You have to commute to it but you can get access to a lot of high grade equipment that way.

Dave The Diver is another; super cute and fun and also around the 16hr mark.

Other than that, Rocket League is life.

Dungeon Crawler Carl - Matt Dinniman

It's a LitRPG series with sci fi elements. The protagonist isn't traditionally nerdy but he does come up with clever solutions to problems, and is certainly plucky in the face of overwhelming odds.

This series is just so damn fun, and remarkably consistent: book 6 just came out and every one of them has been excellent. Each installation continues to expand the scope of the world and the depth of the characters without feeling forced or contrived.

The narration by Jeff Hays is off the charts, his range is incredible - listen to a sample here

If you're down for a funny, wacky, charming, and very violent adventure I would highly recommend checking it out!

As much as I would love a world with Good Corporate Citizens™, that's just super unrealistic. That is inherently opposed to the way capitalism works, unfortunately.

I agree that it's not realistic to expect traditionally structured corporations to behave in any way other than maximizing profits. But there do exist alternative structures where the corporate fiduciary is explicitly not exclusively profit driven, like a Perpetual Purpose Trust. Patagonia is an example of this, where under their corporate restructuring:

the generation of profits is not a goal in itself, but profits are used as a means to serve the purpose of the company. After being reinvested in the company or its stakeholders, they are paid out as dividends to the charity. In Patagnoia’s case: to climate protection and the preservation of undeveloped land around the globe.

Fully agree. I played for an hour and loved it so much that I stopped - I'm waiting until I find someone to share the experience with, this one is special.
