I made the site with Claude Code and Hugo. Its pages are programs in a fictional desktop OS and open as windows. There’s a golf game, a drawing program where you can submit your work, and a game about reading server logs. It's been a long time since I last made a website. Any feedback, good or bad, is welcome. Thanks for looking.

Out of curiosity, do you have prior (non-AI) dev experience at this level? This is a lot more interactive than most sites outside of big media enterprises.

The last website I made was for a clan in the original Call of Duty long ago, using Dreamweaver and some downloaded templates. No other dev experience, but I work in IT.

I played through 18 rounds of the golf game and enjoyed it. Thanks for making something fun.

Glad you enjoyed the game! I just added leaderboards, with separate boards for the Front and Back 9 if you want to play a shorter round and post a score.

Could easily be an alt to keep his real identity separate from an existing Tildes account.

I am not sure using an alt to post slop is better.

And I am not sure this deserves the label "slop". I obviously don't know Spkk and didn't see him make this, but to be perfectly honest this strikes me as a pretty good example of the "right" way to use a generative "AI" system. In my opinion, the mini blog posts on the site (see "Notes") demonstrate thoughtfulness and a substantial amount of artistic consideration:

I eventually found [that simply making a period-accurate retro computer] turned the site into a museum piece, and I wanted it to feel like mine.

A re-creation invites a comparison against memory, and you make it without choosing to. For example: I know, somewhere in my mind, how fast the file window opens on an older OS. The subtle pause in loading and the minimal animation. If you get those details wrong in a re-creation attempting to be an old machine, I feel the spell breaks quickly.

I kept the familiar desktop layout for one main reason: a visitor knows how to move at once. Everything else had to pass a test. Does it give the visitor something of mine, or something useful? “The era had one” doesn’t count.

I went looking, and I realized there are a lot of golf games. (...) I wanted something simple without ads that I could pick up for a few minutes, put down, and come back to later. I couldn’t find that.

Fable made a mockup (...) and eventually, after much more discussion and planning, a spec, which I approved before anything was built.

I wanted to lean into [the idea of golf courses being carefully landscaped parks and gardens], imagining every hole as a clearing in an otherwise natural area.

I knew that Version 2 would need to create its own identity. The interface needed to look and play well on mobile devices especially. The concept I came up with was a single button in the corner of the screen, easily accessible with the thumb.

Every graphic element is reviewed for color-blind readability. The entire site is built to work with screen readers, and can be navigated using only the keyboard. The golf game is the same way, but it also includes an Assisted Play mode (...)

I love programming, and I refuse to have an LLM write a single line of my code because I need to learn and I enjoy doing it. But it's clear to me that there are legitimate ways to express yourself creatively through developing software products even if you don't write the code yourself, and we don't even have to include LLMs in our considerations to see that. As just one example, plenty of professional video game designers don't actually write code for the games they work on; I fail to see how what Spkk has done here is different enough from that to warrant the label "slop".

And I'm not saying Spkk shouldn't learn to program - I think that would be awesome and it's possible he might really enjoy it given his existing IT background! But I think it's obvious that there's nothing wrong with choosing one means of creative expression over another. And doing so doesn't prevent him from pursuing the other later.

This whole reply is going to read like I'm "siding with the AI boosters", so I'd just like to add that this is intended as a comment on the philosophical artistic questions here only. There's obviously a whole host of problems with the culture around "AI" stuff and with the technology itself. I'm not speaking to that at the moment.

TL;DR: My impression is that the term "slop" is intended to convey the opinion "it looks like this person had a one-sentence idea, asked an LLM to make it for them, and then turned around and said 'hey, look what I made!'". This website appears to be quite the opposite of that.

So what you're saying is that you didn't make it.

I'm curious how you used Claude to make it. Not in the "this is AI slop" like some of the others, I'm genuinely curious because I've never used AI for web dev, and the layout is pretty creative.

Thanks! I’m not a programmer, and I can’t write or really read code. What I do have is a long background in IT and a good understanding of how systems fit together. Claude Code writes all the code, and I direct it through conversation. I make or approve every decision, and it’s often a lot of back and forth. I write all the text on the pages myself. What I bring is ideas, logic, and reframing when something isn’t working, and I test it by using it. I’ve written about some of the process in the Notes section if you’d like to read more.

The idea is interesting, but the execution is not.

This is a neat way to set up a personal website, I like it! What other "apps" do you have planned?
