Slightly related: I wish landlords/developers would stop installing shitty microwave vent hoods and just vent the stove (even electric!) properly to the outside. The more surprising thing to me is that people don't use their hoods or open a window to vent their stove and cooking fumes? Something about that just strikes me as painfully obvious.

The kicker is, the current house has an above-stove microwave with a vent fan that vents back into the room. But! In the cabinet above the microwave, there is an aluminum exhaust conduit that appears to go outside. It's been on my to-do list for 2 years now to poke some cameras around in some holes, take the microwave partially apart and figure out if I can flip the exhaust to go outside. Why the hell someone would take an existing exterior hood vent and make it vent inside is beyond me (unless there's some other problem).

OTOH this is the same house where some previous genius owner installed bathroom exhaust fans, and just vented them directly into the ceiling instead of the roof.

Not saying that this is the case, but one of the realities that people with less money face is that they're stuck with things that are detrimental to their health that they can't change. One of my relatives was in a situation where they were allergic to something in their house, but couldn't afford to fix it, and couldn't afford to move. What does one do in a situation like that? Suffer, I guess.

I don't know if an air purifier would help for nitrous dioxide but it definitely helps for smoke particles from frying and broiling.
