I don't know if there's a word for this but I'll try to explain how news like this makes me feel.

Governments and companies have been warned about climate change for decades now and very little has been done about it. Politically it's been turned into theater with climate deniers somehow being victimized while the people warning about climate change being vilified. As an aside, the money spent into the optics of the whole thing is astounding to somehow make the scientists and researches the bad guys and the American gas guzzling family the victim. All the while, of course, the real bad guys stay in the shadows surrounded by a fortress of money.

Anyways, now that the planet is visibly changing before our eyes, as drouts, wildfires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, monsoons, as wildlife changes and goes extinct before our very eyes, as the oceans grow barren, as the north pole melts, I'm finding myself feeling something I can't find a word for.

I feel like unfolding a lawn chair, grabbing a beer, playing some tunes, munching on some snacks while I watch states burn. It's a little sadistic, but it brings me some kind of joy knowing the families I argued against for literal years now have to move because their beloved red state is inhospitable.

I guess I'm enjoying their beloved politics bite them in the ass and some, if not many, will go down still believing there's no such thing as climate change.

Jericho had something similar if you remember. I vaguely remember lawn chairs set up to watch the nuke explosions go off because what else are you gonna do?

The time for action was yesterday. It's clear the governments and corporations of the world want to avoid liability and responsibility as they steer the world into an extinction level event that won't really affect them because they have all the money. Maybe that's why they hoarded it all these years, idk. So even if the world stops tomorrow and changes course, we're still screwed.

So what's the word to describe this feeling of watching it all burn in comfort?

Schadenfreude is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another.

Warning about it in advance and the satisfaction with being proven right adds an element of atodaso that isn't entirely captured by schadenfreude.

Many of us in the west don't recognise the lifestyles we've built off the back of capitalism.

But then we're also so hamstrung by that shitty system we can't see the wood through the trees. It's hard to care about system change when you're two pay checks from homelessness.

Bo Burnham's song "That funny feeling" may resonate with you. "That unapparent summer air in early fall, The quiet comprehending of the ending of it all"

I’m not interested in hearing the slippery slope arguements because I know this isn’t a realistic thing we can do, but it’s a shame that we let these people hold office when it is clear how much damage they are doing.

See, my issue here is that you're right, except they'll do it living in my more progressive state, and voting in local and state elections for the same type of person they voted for that led to their state becoming inhospitable. It's like a virus that destroys its host, then moves on to the next.

We all drive cars, and both parties have lobbiests, but only one side wants to fund the department of transportation and one side loves their big gas guzzling tanks. One side likes electric cars, the other side argues about jobs being lost or tradition or something if we mass adopt electric cars.

One side wants social progress, the other does not and is brain washed by corporate and religious interests disguised as a political party.

While true.... It's the politico of those "Red states" that prevented any meaningful action before it was too late.

Now we, as human being son earth, are stuck with the only way out of extinction being a miracle reversal of some sort.

It's not just the US. It's that line of politics throughout the world that have played at corporate money and power are the only important things.

The planet doesn't care. It will keep.spinning happily until the sun eats it.

It's inhabitants are the one who will suffer.

And at this rate.... My grand kids will be living in a post anarchy hellscape almost no resources.

Without a miracle, were two, may e three generations out from almost total extinction.

And we did it to ourselves. Knowingly. Because of a handful of greedy bastards who only worried about getting theirs, at the cost of everyone else.

Europe in general seems far less equipped to deal with high heat. Not sure what Italy/Greece etc are like since they've always been hotter, but many parts of Europe just don't do A/C at all. Here in Canada, usually apartments don't have central A/C but the vast majority of homes do. I think on the coasts there might be less A/C since it's historically been more mild, but not so in most of the country where temperatures swing wildly between winter and summer.

For a country like the Netherlands, hot summers have never been a real issue. Now 1 in 5 households have cooling, mostly mobile a/c, although the share of fixed split unit a/c is rising fast.

Even building standards for new buildings in the Netherlands look at cooling needs in the summer. Up until two years ago it only looked at heat deand

      China, too:

A remote township in China's arid northwest endured temperatures of more than 52 Celsius (126 Fahrenheit) on Sunday, state media reported, setting a record for a country that was battling minus 50C weather just six months ago.

I'm glad I live in Canada and won't be at all affected by this. Thoughts and prayers to 115M Americans. (Exhales in wildfires' smoke)

I would imagine you have felt the impact of all the Canadian wildfires? It's an insane amount this year.

Really depends on where one lives. I live in Ottawa and this is the first time I can remember seeing wildfire smoke here, and even then it's been a thing maybe a handful of days this summer (mostly when it was making huge news a while back, when it was blowing over much of the east coast of the US including NYC).

Out west it's a whole different story, BC and Alberta experience wildfire season every year at this point with noticeable impacts.

From what I understand, part of why it's so bad this year over here in ON/QC is that Quebec specifically has not really had a lot of big wildfires in like 15 years or something... so with a lack of controlled burns, there's been more fodder for fires this year -- they started and have been able to get a lot more momentum because of all the detritus to burn.

I wish things like this would help more people take climate change seriously. My area is thankfully not affected, but I hope the people in those regions stay safe.
