Yeah, I'm a big fan of Freddie/RocketJump too, and have been for a loooooong time. It makes me so damn happy that they're actively making short films and uploading videos again.

          Okay actual comments!

Forbidden Palace's Chinese name is 頤和園, which is specifically the Summer Palace that Victor Hugo gushed about:

Build a dream with marble, jade, bronze and porcelain, frame it with cedar wood, cover it with precious stones, drape it with silk, [...] suppose in a word a sort of dazzling cavern of human fantasy with the face of a temple and palace, such was this building. The slow work of generations had been necessary to create it. This edifice, as enormous as a city, had been built by the centuries[...]

That's Fon's menu is gorgeous, would definitely have wanted to eat there. Their dishes sound legit. Wontons as Chinese ravioli: fair, I've heard of them jokingly been referred to as 鬼佬雲吞 (foreigners wonton) so ... samsies.

The print shop ladies' accent is so dear to me :) nobody in Hong Kong sounds like that much anymore but they did in the older decades. A kind of branch that is time capsuled overseas.

Mr Dennis Ku just exudes that scholarly aura :D his script is so elegant!! He wrote 黃媽水餃 (Mama Wongs Dumplings and 釘子戶 (Nail House) if anyone wants to compare computer font with his stylistic flair.

Agreed, the graphic design of those menus was genuinely amazing, and the video also made me super nostalgic for the "old days" of simple paper flyers/takeout menus. And yeah, those ladies were adorable. :P They reminded me of my mom's old friend Angie who first introduced my family to and use to regularly take us to Dim Sum when I was a little kid. And also agreed about Mr Ku as well. It's remarkable that he has managed to maintain such deft skill with his calligraphy after all these years. And his humility at the beginning was impressive too. "I'm not a calligrapher, I'm just a regular person"... I beg to differ, Mr Ku, you're absolutely a calligrapher and a remarkable one at that!

BTW, if you liked this video you will probably absolutely love The Search for General Tso. It was a truly fascinating documentary about the history of Chinese-American food and the Chinese diaspora in America, and also featured a guy that had a massive takeout menu collection as well. And Soul of a Banquet was also quite good too even though it was more limited in scope, since it mostly focused on Cecilia Chiang who was widely regarded as the "matriarch" of authentic Chinese cuisine in America.

I mean, it's been his MO ever since Video Game High School. VGHS was just a demo reel for the different styles of TV he could do for producers (hence the wild changes in genre in season 2)....

Personally I'm glad he's been open about it since his return. These things cost money (especially indie things), and after years of financial dancing with movie execs it definitely feels like he knows the blunt approach is the best one. If you've ever read a thread here with a bunch of engagement but barely any upvotes, you've seen the apathetic engagement trap that free content is oft to fall into.

If anyone hasn't seen Boxcar Fight, I highly recommend. Its roughly 15 minutes of skit and then an hour and a half of behind-the-scenes on how they filmed it.

100% agreed. But also just to be clear, I don't actually have a problem with the intro or purpose of the video myself (to raise funds). The only reason I mentioned it is because I wanted to let other people know there was far more depth to the video than the intro and its commercial purposes might have them believe. :P

Me too! I actually even submitted it here a few days ago:
