I played Eve for five years and while the "Spreadsheets in Space" stereotype was overblown (never had to touch them myself), the industrial and economic portion of that game definitely made use of them and I can see this integration being highly useful.

EVE is probably the closest an MMO has truly come to the "living breathing world" ideal of genre. The economy is the most highly complex and (semi-) accurate implementation of the concept that I have ever seen. To run the empires that the game produces requires professional level accounting and logistics for which Excel, ahem, excels.

To be honest I'm surprised this is only happening now.

Are people doing full on market analytics? Statistical modeling?

At rudimentary levels with the the amount of information they can gather from the game yes. I don't want to give the impression that EVE's economy is equivalent in complexity to its real world counterpart but it is far more complex than any other virtual world created to date.

CCP (the developer) also kept an actual economist on staff (at least while I was playing) to lead analytics on their game's economy.

I also played EVE for about the same length of time, 2008-2012 or so. Definitely agree with you there. Not only economically, but politically as well. EVE has so many layers to it's wonderful...

Definitely agree with you there. Not only economically, but politically as well. EVE has so many layers to it's wonderful little onion but unfortunately it requires a lot of time investment to really appreciate.

EVE is, at minimum, a job, at worst, a whole life. Even when I was a student I was barely able to fit it in, I don't understand how functional adult humans balance their EVE life and their careers.

Many call Eve an overglorified collection of Excel spreadsheets, so this announcement has come full circle.
