I just saw something the other day that said we're in the longest "drought" between new Zelda games in the franchise history. BOTW was half a decade ago. Cynically, I think they want to tie BOTW to a new hardware platform you have to buy and that got delayed by chip shortages, hence why we still don't have a new Zelda.

Other things - like why I can't play Chrono Trigger on Switch - genuinely confuse me and make me think Nintendo just hates my money.

Zelda games take forever to develop, and that's something that fans simply have to calm down and wait for. Heck, the Wii U almost didn't get a release of the Zelda game they were promising when they first announced the console. A Zelda game with a rushed development won't feel like a Zelda game aught to.

I'm with you, though, I'm not upset with Nintendo's output; I'm upset with their decision to not sell me the things I know they could sell me but choose not to. The fact that the first Xenoblade title almost didn't get released in the US was just as crazy when it was happening as it is to think back on it today. And there's a huge crowd of people who have been pleading with Nintendo to make an official US and/or European release of Mother 3 since it came out 16 years ago.

This particular gap just seems unprecedented, especially since BOTW 2 is allegedly re-using much of the open world, mechanics, and assets from the original. The closest analogue would be Majora's Mask, which was developed in a quarter of the time spent making it's predecessor.

Either the scope of this game increased dramatically, or shenanigans are afoot.

But I see why people are thirsty for another BOTW adventure. Hell there are so many games that were inspired by the first one. Nintendo set the bar so high with that game I think they are a little gun shy to drop a sequel to try and follow that up.

Speaking of Zelda, Breath of the Wild 2 was announced for this year, got delayed, and will now almost certainly be a 2023 game for their current gen Switch.

I can’t watch the video right now so sorry if the following is mentioned, lol, but if that’s the core argument, I think it’s incomplete. They’re definitely in control of many of the major IPs associated with them that saw no release in 10+ years.

There’s a genuine obsession with “quality” at Nintendo and it, for better or worse, leads to Apple-like minimalism. Better not do something at all than doing it half-assed. Before you go and point out their half-assed online services and whatnot — this is about their definition, not ours.

Concrete example: Miyamoto once said that the reason they’re not producing a new F-Zero is that he sees no “new ideas” for the franchise and this being a requirement to green light a game internally. You’ll also hear in making ofs and reports on their corporate culture that games have to be pitched with very specific requirements for utilizing the newest hardware and whatnot. That’s partially why the Wii/Wii U days were kind of a dark time if you weren’t into input gimmicks.

Ultimately, though, I believe it’s a stubborn refusal to scale their software departments. It’s ridiculous to not have Animal Crossing and Splatoon developed by separate, full-scale studios, for example.

Edit: Watched the video. An interesting explanation of their different internal studios, I long lost track of their “EAD” and “SPD” structures. Still, saying they rely on external studios is not much different from asking why they do not found more internal studios. They have the talent, the money and the IP. I remain baffled. But I can’t really complain about the Switch’s library, it’s mostly just… you know, it could be even better.

We've seen what happens when Nintendo goes against their better judgement and shoves something out despite the quality not being up to muster; Star Fox Zero. I think "We either do it right, or we don't do it at all" is an admirable strategy, and I won't hold it against them.

The strategy has served Apple well. Apple is rarely the first to develop some new technology or class of devices, but they are often the first to get it right.

As much as I want a new F-Zero (or Apple's AirPower charging mat), I think not getting it is probably better than getting something that does not live up to my expectations.

The game is built around the idea of making the Wii U game pad relevant. It failed, but that’s a failure of the whole hardware concept, not the game. That’s the tragedy of the Wii U.

I think that just highlights how the Wii U itself failed to live up to this mantra. Nintendo needed a followup to the Wii, and pushed out something with an expensive and fundamentally flawed gimmick.
