I am very excited for this. MGS is (was?) one of my favorite franchises growing up, as I grew up with Sony consoles.
Is it the Gamecube remake of MGS1? Is there any other improvement? I.E. would there be any difference between playing this, vs the Gamecube backed up on dolphin emulator?

Twin Snakes is a different game altogether. It is Metal Gear Solid with the Metal Gear Solid 2 engine. That means you can performs actions the level design didn't account for like shooting while prone. This trivializes a lot of the game and even a major boss fight. Infamously, it adds a lot of over the top cutscenes. However, it's still a fun time and worth playing.
I'm sad the twin snakes remake didn't make the cut. I know it gets shat on a lot for adding goofy karate fighting to every cutscene, But as someone who grew up on Nintendo, it was my first (and...

I replayed through the original Metal Gear Solid recently when the PlayStation Classic released (edit: oh my god that was five years ago what even is time anymore).
I was impressed by how well it held up by modern standards. Some of that could have been that I had played through the game before and was adequately familiar with its contours, but I get the impression that even a brand new player in 2023 could still get into it and appreciate it with minimal friction. It's still compelling, well-made, and thoughtfully designed. It also doesn't have the same bad camera issues as other 3D games of that time.
I haven't played through any other MGS game though, so this release is a welcome one. I was actually planning on emulating MGS2 on my Steam Deck, but I'll just wait for this instead.
I guess it is not surprising the MGS: 4 is not in this collection. Sadly, this is the only one I haven't played. I wonder how many more years we will have to wait until we can get it re-released...

I think it can. It's been many years, i'm certain 4 can be retooled for x86 and ARM. It's just a bear to port, and Konami is smartly going to make it part of a Volume 2.

I'm personally hoping Vol 2 goes full portable games: Peace Walker Portable Ops / plus Ghost Babel AC!D 1 + AC!D 2 Now for really bizarre inclusions that have little to no chance of being included...

Now for really bizarre inclusions that have little to no chance of being included but would be interesting:
MGS Touch
MGS Social OPS
MGS Mobile
MGS 3 for 3DS

As far as the emulation goes, it's not perfect. Maybe I need to update RPCS3, but it still stutters plenty. There has been a revival of the online mode through modding, called SaveMGO and it runs incredibly well. That's if you can learn the game without getting dunked on by the people still playing haha.
Yes, I would recommend starting with the original release order. Things will be more amusing when you start seeing things in 3, which is the prequel for everything. I mean, you could start with...

I mean, you could start with the MSX ones to get the story but it gets kinda recounted in 1, 2 and so on.
I love MGS1, and I think it's a great place to start too. Just make sure you're in the headspace for a PSX game -- it's 25 years old now, so it lacks a fair bit of QoL that would be added in later...

If you want to stick with the 3D games, 2 is a fairly direct sequel to 1, and 3 is a prequel to both with a different character. You could start with 3, then do 1, then 2.

the gameplay was pretty nice though, if a little clunky (but that’s old games for you hehe)

There's a lot of sexual tension between those characters that does get stick. As she also goes into detail about conditioning she received to destroy her interest in men.

i imagine it will still analyze your playthrough so far, but idk if they'll put effort into updating the 2nd controller hack (could replace w/ touchscreen somehow for switch?) But otherwise i imagine a 2nd controller might work... without disconnecting first?
Will it keep "HIDEO" input switch fakeout or replace it with a "system update" or something more modern?
I'm guessing it wont change much and somethings just wont "work"

This gives me such a hard on. I've never played the games because I'm a guy that MUST start from the beginning in movies/TV shows/ and games. This makes me so happy.

Mine too. It's so good to finally be able to play it again and on Steam none the less. Fingers crossed it's a good port.

I mean it's not out yet so who knows right. It's good to have the option though.

"Vol. 1" might imply a second volume with more games, including 4, but I'm not sure if the Switch could run 4 well.

Man I love these games.
Thank you to everyone who replied. I will definitely have a go and will start with 1. I’ve heard great things so I’m excited.

If you want context for MGS 2, yes. But you can start with MGS 3 as well, as that is the prequel to those first two.
That's what I did. I played MGS3 on PS2 first, it's become my favorite game ever, and then I played the rest over the years (except I dropped MGS V).

Column a, Colunn B approach.
It does unfortunately suffer from being a Japanese game, yeah. If you can tolerate it, they are really cool games otherwise
Let's ask the real questions here...
How will the Psycho Mantis fight in MGS go?

They're kind of part of the subsistence version of MGS3. I think the only MGS3 release after that one not to include them was the one for the 3DS.
This gives me such a hard on. I've never played the games because I'm a guy that MUST start from the beginning in movies/TV shows/ and games. This makes me so happy.
Awesome Direct. Lots of surprises.
