It's worth noting that in Civilization V the bug is not a hoax at all but a very real bug. This is referenced in the linked wikipedia article and in its sources:

At the start of a game, each of the attributes gets modified by a random dice roll which can range from -2 to +2. Hence, Gandhi’s 12 out of 10 rating in nukes assures that he will always get a max rating for that tendency even if the dice roll ends up at -2.

The hoax is when people claim that this happens in games in the series other than Civilization 5. But for most people Civilization 5 was the first game that they bought in the series (source: unit sales) and so when they talk about "Nuclear Gandhi" they are, in fact, correct.

True, although the idea that it's a bug is still apocryphal, as the designers deliberately implemented Gandhi that way :D

      That's not a bug, it's a feature :)

I recently recounted the (always hilarious tale) of the Nuclear Gandhi glitch to a friend who had seen the memes but didn't understand their provenance. I happened to see a mention of playing against Gandhi in Civ on Mastodon today, and it piqued my curiosity. Imagine my surprise when the Wikipedia article states that it's a hoax, confirmed by Sid Meier himself!

Youtube games journalists People Make Games did an excellent video tracking down the truth of the rumor (as well as dozens of other top-notch videos)

Wow. I had no idea this was a hoax. I completely believed it. I also played civilization before I heard of the "bug" and still believed it after. That's the power of suggestion.

This is so cool! My friends on Xbox live back in the day used to tell me about this glitch. Didn't stop them from picking Ghandi to showcase what was supposed to happen.

I'm guilty of acting bullish towards Ghandi in all my play throughs because of believing this rumor! I had one game where he utilized nukes and that was enough to convince me, but then again I think I was the one to start that conflict. When 6 was released, I recall even the commentary of that game covered that the "bug" was taken out. Interesting how it's inspired so much play dialog that it was never real in the first place!

Sorry Gandhi, I have preemptively Nuked you during many a play through.

As a side note I find the AI very annoying because they are extremely quick to anger and get all fighty but there’s nothing you can do to make them friendly again. 2-3 civs can be plotting against you and you take one out and let the others survive and set up mutually beneficial trades but they never want to be friendly and eventually try to murder you.

Usually around 1960 I’m rocking helicopter gunships and fighting musketmen (I play on easy difficulties) and they get all fighty until I have to put them down :(

I just want a peaceful cultural victory without other civs settling cities between mine.

Aggressive religion spreading in Civ 5 also makes me have to take them out. It’s always Catherine the great spreading Buddhism by force…
