The game selection is not bad/not great however for a couple more bucks a month Ultimate just seems better.

Yeah, the one eh thing about this is they're not giving details on how Core Annual would convert to Ultimate, presumably it's going to be devalued. Glad I reupped in January.

There's a lot to unpack about this.

    • This is being added to the "Game Pass tiers of subscriptions" as "the cheapest one", which given the name is what everyone and their mother will assume, BUT Game Pass Console, one of the middle tiers, which is $1 more expensive than Game Pass Core, is missing a feature that the cheapest "core" tier has, being online play (which is not a minor feature, obviously). From the naming scheme alone, it's not clear that Game Pass Console isn't an objective upgrade from Core, unless you used to be an Xbox user before this change, or read the fine print, so this will 100% confuse someone. Sony probably had the right idea making all tiers of PS Plus objective upgrades of the previous tiers. It sucks for people who just want a library of singleplayer games, but for everyone else it's way simpler.
    • Not getting monthly games to keep anymore is technically a bad change since, like every other subscription service, they can remove items from the pool they've provided for you whenever they want, as we so often see with video streaming services like Netflix and with Game Pass itself. As a PS Plus Essential user, it's great that I can still access the PS4 games I claimed 8 years ago whenever I'm subscribed, and don't really have to worry about the rug being pulled under me when I'm in the middle of playing it (barring some extreme circumstance as big as when Konami killed PT). I've heard from friends that the games Xbox Gold offered weren't nearly as good as PS Plus, so most people might not care, and their existing library of claimed Gold games apparently will still be on their account (they just won't get any more), I just dislike how stuff comes and goes on subscription services so I'm biased.
    • Overall, this is probably a good move though, if they can get naming and pricing and all that for the tiers to make sense, since Game Pass has become a more iconic name than Gold, and as Sony realized, having 2 unrelated subscriptions in the same console ecosystem is weird and confusing.

A couple of weeks ago I let my gamepass expire and redid the "buy 3 yrs of gold from costco and then convert" trick, glad I did that now.

I might consider this at some point but I am extremely disappointed they discontinued the friends and family plan and raised the prices on their other plans
