I've had this on my Steam wishlist for a good while more out of sheer curiosity than anything, but I've never had the impulse to actually buy it though. It looks interesting, but information on it is kind of scarce, like is it a sandbox? Does it have an ending? If so how long is it? That sort of thing...

So from what I'm reading (just got back home to actually try playing it here after a quick Tildes check) - it's open world and you aren't forced to go along with things so you can play it as a mining/salvaging/trading sandbox, but there is a storyline you can play, both at the macro world level and an RPG storyline/dialogue system for your crew members. That said, don't know much about the length or such yet.

I just downloaded the demo to try it out, and they have a message saying that the demo is unlimited for the duration of the Ukraine War conflict - so you can play it for free if you want!

I've played around 30 hours of Delta V in early access and I think what you asked is it's weakest part.
The gameplay is rock solid (joke intended) and very more-ish to keep upgrading your little ship. Reminds me a lot of motherloade.
However (at least when I played around a year ago) there are quests and popup as you explore but no way to track them or have a good understanding of what to do next.

For example you get a request from a crew member to speak to her sister who's somewhere out in the belt on a station. You accept. She says she's on station three. You can ask passing by ships and other ships where station three might be, they'll say they aren't sure, or give you a very vague direction.
you'll find multiple stations which aren't station three.
I felt like it was eventually luck when I did, then the next part of the quest was equally "captain we need to go to X" and I had no concept of how to get to X or find it.

Maybe I missed something, but I did a lot of Googling and reading the forums and the time and it seemed intended.

Otherwise it's great fun to just fly around and enjoy.

This is a frustration I've reached with this game. I'm at a comfortable point of having figured out my ship "build" and how things work. Along with having a bulky wallet. I want to continue the story/narrative/etc. but have no idea how.

Based on what I've experienced so far, I'm supposed to randomly stumble into ladar contacts, or get coordinates from ships I randomly bump into. Keyword: random.

I hope I'm missing something (which wouldn't surprise me) because I really won't want to repeatedly go out on mining runs because it's not about the money anymore. I want to progress the narrative.

My understanding is that it's not a sandox. 12 hours gameplay, per the author. Not sure about an ending though. Based on the description though, it feels similar to another game I've played called Occidental heroes. The premise there being each of the mercenaries that you can hire for your crew has character progression that they go through and that is the story of the game.

I couldn't help but notice that too. Interesting to say the least. I saw SsethTzeentach's review of Hardspace Shipbreaker and I'm mildly interested in that one.

I've been playing since the day it became available, it was worth it back then and even more so now imo

Just finished the tutorial. Was obsessed with Escape Velocity back in the day so this looks very up my alley. Might be making it a littler harder than it needs to be on Steam Deck but it runs well.

About 15 hours in, and I think I've reached a point of frustration where I think I am going to drop this and not recommend. I was running in to what appeared to be a bug that caused literally hours of lost progress and after investigating the developer was pretty much "It's a feature fly better lol, maybe there should be a message or something". Like nobshit there should be a message when something happens that can cause literally hours of lost time. If it was still EA I'd be more sympathetic but they said it's 1.0, so it just completely soured me on the entire experience.

    edit

And a couple days later, I think that was highly motivated by the frustration. I'm still ticked off at the lost time, but the game still has fun aspects. I'm going to upgrade this from Not Recommended to Mixed. Consider it to still be effectively EA - if you're fine playing an EA game that still has rough edges and the genre appeals to you, you're still likely to have fun.

Just curious, what specifically was it that happened in your original experience?

There are containers that fill up with resources from your ship that you can detach and send flying back independently. I had a couple instances of setting them loose, flying back... and the container/resources being gone with no indication as to what happened. When I reported it as a bug, apparently they were blowing up mid trip back, but there was no indication that they had been damaged before being launched or that anything happened to them.

Oh nice! I bought it a while ago but it's still in my backlog. I should check it out now that it's at 1.0

I first heard about this game a couple years back when I was learning Godot, and was impressed at what they pulled off with it. I bought it earlier this year, and waited for it to go gold. It's great. I like how crunchy it looks and feels.

Some of the info in this thread has me really interested, especially since I didn't really know there was a story or anything.

Fun game on the steam deck once you get the controls sorted out.

Not really, just not ideal for a controller. You end up relying on the auto pilot a good amount and and just avoid some things. I ended mapping the scanning feature to one of the track pads to make it easier. You just lock onto your target and manage your velocity. I'll have to look into how to share it.
