I built a decorative observatory around 450, -850. The entrance still needs a lot of work, and at some point I need to build a nether highway to it, but for now those who use elytras can fly to the outdoor patio, and those on foot can take a couple bubblevators on the... South? East? Side. I'm away from the game for now, so I'm not sure the exact coords of the bubblevators. People are welcome to build and improve upon it!
PS, unless it's already got one, my cave/home in the lake on Earl's Court needs an address. Is 19 Earl's Court taken?
PPS, that floating island is the coolest survival build I think I've ever seen

Notably at spawn, I had built a house since spawn is awesome now. I'm working on expanding it into a little village, building some houses for people to take over.

If I joined the server, would I have to help with the community projects, or could I just go in a random direction, find somewhere nice and build? Also, just to check, is it creative or survival?

Just follow the one (and only) rule: Don't be a dick!
I'll also add that I'm usually much more of a by-myself builder (usually in creative even) but I barely got my own house done because I had too much fun running around and helping with the community projects hah.

On my first day in the server, I effed off to find a decent spot to build out in the wilderness. I was eventually drawn back to TildeTown both for the resources from the farms, and to make my own minor contributions (mainly the allays and several elytras I'd found), but those contributions were never expected of me, I was just happy to have a good reason to fly around the End for hours and hours.
There's plenty of areas hundreds of meters from the roads where someone has just built up a homestead, so you wouldn't be out of place just building something somewhere. Part of the fun of the server is just not being alone while you play!

All the third party minecraft launchers look to have had dodgy histories and I'd regard them as unsafe
Modrinth recently launched their own launcher. If you don't trust anything from the MultiMC/PolyMC/Prism family that's something worth checking out: https://modrinth.com/app. Alternatively there are the likes of ATLauncher and GDLauncher but without knowing what exact part of these launchers you see as "dodgy" I don't think anyone can be of help.
You can install Fabric and a modpack such as Fabulously Optimized by hand, but it's a lot of busywork compared to just being a few clicks with a third party launcher.
As for Steam Decks, Fabulously Optimized includes Controlify which claims to support the Deck's controls (except for gyro), but other than that you can treat the Deck as a regular Linux desktop. At least for the Modrinth launcher their AppImage build should work out of the box. (It doesn't seem to be on Flathub/Discover yet). Prism and ATLauncher on the other hand are on there and should be easier to set up and keep up to date.

I've been using my Steam Deck to play on this server, actually! Only just yesterday got my PC set back up after moving, so the Deck was the only way I had to play.
I'm using Prism launcher, and I'm unaware of any issues surrounding it. If there's reason for me not to use it, someone please let me know. I had to do the setup in desktop mode, but it plays in game mode perfectly.
As for controls, I don't even use any mods. I just bound the Decks controls to keyboard/mouse inputs in whatever way felt natural for me, using the Bedrock edition controls as a base. I even use the gyro for mouse control a little, although that gets rough on the wrists eventually.
I can try to share the control scheme if I can figure out how to do that later.

To be clear, the PolyMC takeover was an extremely unlikely event that did not end up harming to users; the perpetrator had few vectors to cause harm since PolyMC does not have automatic updates (for this very reason, I think) and they didn't even intend to harm users in the first place, their attack was targeted towards the maintainer team. The transition to Prism Launcher was handled efficiently within the day.
As of MultiMC, the reasons for the PolyMC fork were primarily open-source politics and not interpersonal drama; for what it's worth, MultiMC is still in development, open-source and safe, even if it lacks some of PolyMC and Prism Launcher's most powerful features.
I would heavily recommend you use Prism Launcher. I'm not into cybersecurity, but I would say it's the safest launcher out there. It doesn't connect to the Internet without your input, doesn't collect data for telemetry or advertisement and is fully open-source. It's also probably the fastest, simplest, most powerful and most Linux-compatible launcher. Most resources I've seen regarding Minecraft on Linux assume you use one of the launchers in the MultiMC family.

For controller support, you want to look at Controllable if you're on Forge, and MidnightControls or Controlify if you're on Fabric. I'm more familiar with MidnightControls (or rather the mod it's forked from) but Controlify looks decent, so I'd suggest trying both.
For performance, it also depends on the mod loader; but the advice I would give is to avoid Optifine if you can. It's a famous name, but it's very outdated and doesn't really improve performance any more, while causing many bugs for other mods. Instead, you'll want to use mods like Sodium, Lithium, etc, or their Forge versions. There's also a ton of smaller mods that make improvements to performance, as well as mods containing replacements to Optifine features.
Take a look at Modrinth and see what you can find. You could just grab all the mods that catch your eye, or you could install a modpack that will have everything set up for you.
Thank goodness! It was easy getting lost at spawn. First few times logging in I didn't know there was even a town. Spawn looks amazing, unrecognizable from before.

Pretty simple stuff. Beyond that just have fun :) Also in tildestown there are a bunch of community farms and chests you can freely take from. They’re clearly marked as such, so no worries about mixing them up with private chests.
Actually, you can safely walk on crops! In older versions you needed to crouch, but now it's only necessary to avoid jumping or otherwise landing on farmland from above.

I'm playing on steam deck too! For me (I'm using Controllify) I open chat by opening the control wheel (by pressing down right on the d-pad), selecting the chat option (bottom right), and then manually opening the keyboard with steam button + x. That plus using a controller to type probably makes me look very slow and taciturn lol.
I've barely played any Minecraft at all before so no worries about being a fish out of water. I got killed by the same skeleton like 5 times in a row today lol.
EDIT TO ADD: Just found out pressing up on the d-pad opens chat too

Ah sorry, must've miswritten it! But yeah the map mod is the only reason I've ever gotten home lol, I get lost even wandering around town without them.

It's a 1-2 hour game event where we load into a new map with health regeneration and respawning disabled. Players join small teams and are scattered around the map. Slowly the world border shrinks until all players are forced to kill each other. Last team standing wins!
There will be a special prize for the winning team.

So far I've set up a café next to the acacia line station for people who want a bit of ambience and a slice of cake.
I'm also fleshing out a safe zone on the other side of one of the End portals as a sort of base camp for explorers. It prevents any endermen from spawning or entering, so the only way for them to get in is by teleporting if they've been aggroed. Once there are more buildings to shelter in even that won't be a concern.
I feel like at this point the town is getting so full we'll need to create a second one soon enough, it's getting harder and harder to find decent spots to build stuff that isn't basically in the...
I feel like at this point the town is getting so full we'll need to create a second one soon enough, it's getting harder and harder to find decent spots to build stuff that isn't basically in the boondocks.
Anyways, I'm building a bridge linking the town entrance and that northern islet. I don't remember who suggested it, but the idea was to make it have space on the sides to accomodate small buildings, like houses or whatever people decide to build there, for reference check Ponte Vecchio on Google.
My idea was initially to just let empty spaces on the sides and let other people build there, but I've come to the conclusion that's an unrealistic expectation, so I'm planning on slowly building little houses and whatnot there, BUT if anyone wants to contribute and build stuff on the sides as well that's very welcome.
I built a decorative observatory around 450, -850. The entrance still needs a lot of work, and at some point I need to build a nether highway to it, but for now those who use elytras can fly to the outdoor patio, and those on foot can take a couple bubblevators on the... you can do whatever.
People have already beaten the enderdragon though, like the first day it was up lol

If I remember correctly its a survival server and you should be free to do whatever you want.

Mind if I build a service station somewhere along the way? Seems fit for a highway!
I think I fixed the spawn area so players should spawn on the ground now.

Awesome, makes sense! Most of this seems self-explanatory but I'd have def walked on crops accidentally without being told that lol.
