what makes Cities: Skylines 2 stand out is that on most systems and in most situations the game is GPU-bound — rather unusual for a game of this genre, as most games like this tend to be really heavy on the CPU (such as the original Cities: Skylines), but relatively light on graphics

This alone explains why the ways it performs poorly are so weird to me -- I play plenty of other simulation games, and I'm used to their CPU-bound lag issues. But that kind of lag gets worse over the course of the game, as there are more and more entities to simulate, whereas the poor performance for Cities Skylines 2 exists from the get-go.

I've got a 3070 (which up until this game has been pretty under-utilized tbh) so I've been able to play the game for a bit and overall I really like it. But the poor performance is definitely palpable even for me, and that's after changing my graphics preset down to medium and taking the steps Paradox recommended. It's more an issue with stutters for me, so I'm going to base my settings on the recommendations in Gamers Nexus's video until they patch things sufficiently.

Neat article and general analysis. Not only because it just looks at the bad but makes an honest attempt at understanding why performance is the way it is. Meanwhile, it also manages to touch on...

    From the conclusion:

While I did find a lot to complain about the game’s technology, this little investigation which has been consuming a large share of my free time for the past 1.5 weeks has also made me appreciate the game’s lofty goals and sympathize more with the developers of this technically ambitious yet troubled game. I’ve learned a lot about how Cities: Skylines 2 & Unity HDRP work under the hood, and I’ve also gotten some good practice with Renderdoc.
