I'm a newer fan so I started at World, so I don't have too much depth in terms of monster knowledge! Honestly right now I'm still stuck at Primordial Malzeno in Rise and Fatalis in World haha. As a gunlance main I don't think I have the hangups with other monsters that other people do though (Lavaslioth and Jyuratodus come to mind lol). In terms of normal monsters, Bazel is probably up there though lol.

A couple of months ago I spent a lot of time grinding Chaotic Gore Magala and I'm pretty sure I can do it blindfolded at this point. Such a fun monster to hunt though, probably my favorite off the top of my head.

What about you? What do you main and what's your favorite monster to hunt?

I've been a katana/longsword main since Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I started with great swords and couldn't stand how cumbersome they were. I've never been a defensive player. I prefer to get in, deal as much damage as I can when the opportunity presents itself, then dive out at the last second. The speed of the long sword felt more gratifying than a solid impact with a charged great sword swing. That said, I remember struggling a lot with the Kirin and Kushala Daora. I don't even know that I ever made it to the Fatalis. My absolute favorite has to be the Deviljho. That thing is truly insane from the way it choke slams other monsters that wander into the battlefield to it's speed and tenacity, it's always entertaining the wax and get waxed by the Deviljho. Honorable mentions to the Tigrex and the G rank Pink Rathian.

I'm still not sure how any longsword mains manage to fight Kirin lol it's such a small monster with some weird hitboxes. That's why I love gunlance so much, doesn't matter how many hard parts the monster has, we just go boom.

Deviljho is soooo satisfying to fight lol. getting a well executed knockout is one of my favorite things.

A weird one, but Khezu is the first thing that comes to my mind for monsters that give me fits. I dread fighting one anytime it comes up. I think it has to do with the lack of music and, thus, a lack of rhythm in my play. I never realized I was dependent on the BGM rhythm so much until I fought one of these bastards!

Of course, someone's going to say "Just turn off the music and play your own!" .. I could, but then I lose out on many subtle sound design cues like the music fading when the monster runs... or the distinctive sound of an invading monster's unique BGM starting. For example: when you're focused on fighting your target and suddenly hear this iconic piece of music, or when you're fighting a major boss encounter and suddenly cross a major threshold and then Proof of a Hero starts playing. Also, the MH soundtracks are just so generally top tier and help immerse me into the world... which is why Khezu just puts me so hard off balance!

It brings me joy to know we shared in the Khezu struggle. That's the monster that brought me to a weeks long stand still. I think I tried and failed some 40 attempts at taking out the khezu. By the time I finally succeeded there wasn't and glory in it. No pomp and circumstance. All my friends had moved on to higher hunter rank quests by the time I was finished.

Yeah... I kinda wish they had waited to reveal it cause it's so far away :(. And just with that tease I'm excited (but then again right now I'm on a huge monster hunter kick thanks to MHnow. MH stories, mh stories 2, mh world. For some reason I just don't feel like getting into Rise again which is good cause 3 games is already too many to want to play at one time).

Rise is really good, but I think a good chunk of the community is on World still. Is Stories any good? I've been meaning to try it but I haven't been able to yet.

I love stories but I started with stories 2. I have to say they dumbed down the game in 2 and I wish they hadn’t but they are both still good games (and 2 has much better user interface). Also, the only monster hunters that have decent story.

But if you like Pokémon and you like mh, you’ll probably like stories. It really feels like a cross between the two.

Monster Hunter is one of like, maybe three franchises where I just unquestioningly go and buy the new release whenever it shows up. I've played since MHF on the PSP. The gameplay has expanded a ton since the big shift with World and it's been a fun ride. Wilds looks like it's pushing scale further which is something I've def wanted to see. As much as I enjoyed World and Rise, I still am hoping we get a game with bigger, more varied spaces. A multibiome map, done the way they do them, would be sick. The more "wild animal shit" the better, too. The bit where he weaves within the stampede looked like gameplay, I hope it was.

This is exciting, i have a thing to pay attention to. I still have to finish Sunbreak too so this gives me a little push.

If you ever run Primordial Malz a bunch let me know, I need the help for that one lol.

I got about halfway through before other stuff grabbed my attention. I think once I'm done with the current game I'll hop back in. Mained a longsword pretty much since they first appeared - I keep trying other weapons but they just don't click with me quite the same. Sword and shield was always my second favorite, so I'll probably start there and see

Go for it! I've been looking at new weapons myself, I'm looking at swaxe, it's probably the next most boring weapon lol

I feel like a crazy person for not being super hyped as everyone else, I think it is because it looks more like an iteration on MH Rise and I really want the franchise to scale back on the super fast paced combat of Rise. It was already a bit too fast in World but Rise pushed it past my preferences.
But I know I'll pre-order it and have a blast playing it with friends regardless of what direction they go, even the "bad" MH games are amazing games.

Oh and keeping the palamutes is great!

Combat might be a bit different especially since it's the World team working on this one. I agree though, I initially kinda didn't love Rise cuz it was so fast, I play Gunlance for a reason lmaooo.

Honestly putting Palamutes in a world like setting and scaling up the world makes it so hype lol.

World for me was the perfect balance in combat. Got rid of most of the annoyances of previous games but still had that "get greedy and you'll pay" feel of making sure you wait for the right time for an attack (rise was too forgiving in that you many times could still avoid getting attacked if you got greedy).

Though admittedly now, I'm playing World again (it's been a long time) and while I sitll love the gameplay over Rise, there is a lot of stuff I miss from Rise. Small things like how menus are done and I miss an easier melee attack with bow (we discovered we could cut tails in Rise. Trying it in World and it's so awkward I dont' think I'll ever get good enough to do it). Also Rise got rid of most of the egg quests and made it easier to boot to do an egg quest (I HATE egg quests. I don't find them fun, I just find them annoying, slow, and frustrating. And you always need to do them to expand your canteen).

I gotta say, I appreciate an egg quest here and there XD but yeah they can be boring or very frustrating but in a way that's part of what makes Monster Hunter such a fully fleshed world despite we knowing very little about it in the grand scheme of things. For example, eliminating hot and cold drinks seems like a very innocuous change but if they keep streamlining it ends up being a more generic action game with polished combat, the game has to sell the illusion of "the hunt" as an expedition that you embark on. I thought the solution of MHW to get rid of paint balls was a good idea, a nice compromise, the change in Rise was a step too far.

About the combat, when the hunting horn is giving me dual blade vibes I think something went wrong. But maybe I'm just an old man yelling at the clouds at this point.

But I still hink they could get rid of egg quests and nothing would be lost. That’s not really hunting anyways.
