The Vorrh by Brian Catlin touches on all of the topics you've mentioned. It centres around a jungle in German-occupied pre WWI Africa. The jungle drives the economy of the city but there are strange forces that make homes in its depths. There are 3 books with 3 main characters that are featured in the entire trilogy. Some of the passages are so beautifully written that I had to stop and read them again 3 or 4 times. It's such a strange story with twists and turns that don't sink in until you're speaking about them to someone out loud. Please try The Vorrh.

I've seen a lot about Lee's death being anticlimactic and I think that's the point, and I think that's illustrated by the context of her death. The entire movie has been building to finding the president. Everyone who dies along the way, whether they're shooting a gun or shooting a camera, is risking everything to get the shot that will mean the most. Lee got caught in the crossfire. As important to she was to Jessie and to the plot, I think it was an appropriate send off. And I think the way they kept it pushin without spending too much time on it was done well. I also think Sammy's death got Lee killed. If Sammy had survived, I don't think she would have spiralled to a point where springing for Jessie was her first impulse.

I've been a katana/longsword main since Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I started with great swords and couldn't stand how cumbersome they were. I've never been a defensive player. I prefer to get in, deal as much damage as I can when the opportunity presents itself, then dive out at the last second. The speed of the long sword felt more gratifying than a solid impact with a charged great sword swing. That said, I remember struggling a lot with the Kirin and Kushala Daora. I don't even know that I ever made it to the Fatalis. My absolute favorite has to be the Deviljho. That thing is truly insane from the way it choke slams other monsters that wander into the battlefield to it's speed and tenacity, it's always entertaining the wax and get waxed by the Deviljho. Honorable mentions to the Tigrex and the G rank Pink Rathian.

It brings me joy to know we shared in the Khezu struggle. That's the monster that brought me to a weeks long stand still. I think I tried and failed some 40 attempts at taking out the khezu. By the time I finally succeeded there wasn't and glory in it. No pomp and circumstance. All my friends had moved on to higher hunter rank quests by the time I was finished.

It sounds like you've got support, income, and passions in NA that you don't have to the same degree in Asia.

I finished it again this week for the first time since it originally aired. The Fortune Teller aged really really well. Rewatching it with concepts like 'antivax' and 'fake news' having surfaced in the interim made that episode that much more evocative.
