McMaster is no hero. I was active in the custom android ROM scene back when Cyanogen was still a thing and depended on the CyanogenMOD upstream for my builds. So hanging around with Cyanogen staff (who were in charge for all bug issues and pull requests) was vital for knowing when new features and fixes were available for my phone.

The two founders were both total pieces of work but when everything went to hell, Kondik was very vocal about putting all the blame on McMaster especially with regards to numerous tech-bro incidents including the infamous "putting a bullet though Google's head" remark. It seems he was hard to deal with internally and externally, he exaggerated and lied about Cyanogen's abilities to the press along with making numerous bad business deals that ruined their autonomy and funding.

That said, if anyone wants to play around with a "gamer linux" that isn't in bed with crypto and is ready for PC use along with other hand-held systems (ROG, steamdeck, etc) go check out Bazzite. I run it as my daily driver OS on my gaming PC and I've had a nice time once I figured out how rpm-ostree worked.

What is this a dig at? I'd not heard of any of the major "gamer linux"s as in bed with crypto?

        from the article

Also, there are crypto-focused investors and a mention of offering crypto-based game purchases, though Playtron may also not have a store at all.

They had a round of crypto-focused VC wooing that netted them funding from blockchain companies Plychain (cheap and shitty crypto pokemon knockoff, FEEL THE RUSH), Mysten Labs (proof-of-stake plumbing, buzzword fest), CMT Digital (general crypto investment firm. The hip new wing of a much larger traditional firm), Sui (cryptocurrency, "Players own assets, creators manage royalties"), and Circle (the "stablecoin" people that named their currency USDC, thus closing the circle on Nakamoto original concept).

This may just amount to a storefront that takes crypto payment alongside normal money but since I find the entire blockchain fintech field to be abhorrent, I'll stand by my use of the "in bed with" idiom.

I'd rather have my gaming OS be storefront agnostic. Let me run my software where I please and keep your targeted ads and investor interests away from my free time.

I'm unsure what "core casuals" are available. Most of the gaming casuals I know are marginally aware of PC gaming... maybe know about the Steam Deck. They don't even know the ROG Ally exists and that's before getting into slightly more niche markets such as the Playdate. Casuals are perfectly happy with their Playstations, Xboxes, and Switches or their phones. I mean, good luck to them but the marketing budget alone is nearly unfathomable to make it to the eyes of "casual gamers."

Totally agree. I'm average PC gamer, but casual on smart phones (android) when on the go . The nature of most of the games on mobile I play are casual in nature (would say most of ones I've tried - heaps more so). All friends who are pc gamers I wouldn't even class as casual ... So not sure who "core casuals" really are unless they meant mobile gaming market ?

One more reason my RSS reader and agent YOShInOn needs a Tildes crawler. (1) Tildes has a low tolerance for dupes compared to some other communities so something like that can catch dupes that I miss when I do a visual scan and (2) I badly want a model that can put tags like "books", "games" and "sports" on headlines because (a) it would make posting to Tildes easier and (b) Tildes should have a good enough data set to train such a thing.

I'm not complaining about dupes, just pointing to previous discussion so people don't feel like they're repeating convo :)

          (1) I want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem and (2) every two days or so YOShInOn ingests about 6000 articles and picks 300 for me to look at, I can post about 30 a day to Hacker News but not that many to Tildes. The limit to quality now is not the machine but me but I know the machine could help me eliminate a lot of my mistakes.

FYI, Tildes has RSS feeds. Main page: https://tildes.net/topics.rss Or ones for every individual group if you prefer: https://tildes.net/~anime/topics.rss https://tildes.net/~arts/topics.rss...

YOShInOn already subscribes to the main RSS feed. (Amusingly, an article I post to Tildes has an almost 100% chance of being shown to me in the next cycle because well.. I liked it and YOShInOn knows what I like)

Since duplicate detection is mainly a matter of looking the last few days of articles it might be sufficient to look at what it ingests from the RSS feeds but the tough issue there is getting real time performance when between me and the rest of the system there can be a delay from 2-8 days between something getting posted, Superfeedr picking it up, YOShInOn ingesting it and then classifying it, me selecting in it as a "favorite", then me deciding to post a link to it somewhere, and then that queue draining so it's not enough to catch dupes when I make the post decision but I want to catch them even if they happen after that which means speeding up parts of the pipeline. The long delay is usually not a problem except for articles about sports where we sometimes post an article about what happened in week 2 of the NFL but it gets delayed until after the week 3 games are played in which case we look really stupid. That and articles from ArsTechnica that I post to Hacker News.

For the model training, on the other hand, I want all the headlines and the tags and the scores but I don't need the comments.

I built a web crawler for my other agent (the FraXiNUs image sorter) which is based on the YOShInOn code and will probably be merging the two of them together one of these days and then I'll get to make those improvements.

What is the plan here? The killer function that no one else can match? If Microsoft can outspend you, and Valve got to where you are first, what exactly are you bringing to the table? Maybe you make a deal to backend and become the official Epic or GOG Platform, but what would they want to do with hardware? I don't get it.

I think also the "casual" user is going to be hard to get away from smartphones.

This definitely feels like a solution in search of a problem.
