I’ve been impressed by this new singer so far. She even does the 15+ second scream Chester was known for, and on the line “THIS IS WHAT YOU ASKED FOR” at that.

The League of Legends Worlds tournament playoffs started today and they released the tournament anthem yesterday.

Very different style of song from last year but as usual great animation from Riot. Always lots of little visuals to spot for famous players and champions from the game. Quite the spotlight for Linkin Park as far as eastern audiences go what with their recent lineup change.

I see a lot of hate for the new singer but she really is fantastic. Some of the initial lives she seemed a bit nervous, but now that more live videos have come out I have seen her nail some REALLY difficult songs like “crawling.” Chester even said he doesn’t like doing that song live due to how hard it is to hit those notes.

    You can call me impressed!

I think most agree that she was a good pick in terms of skill. A lot of people, including myself, are put off by her association with scientology.

I hate Scientology as much as the next guy. I think the Danny Masterson section was covered already, so I’ll skip that. I have a few questions to ask:

Has she ever advocated for the church?
Did she join by her own volition?
Can we confidently say that she is not currently being victimized by Scientology herself?

From my research, it appears that she was born into it and has never publicly identified with it.

I watched Leah Remini’s documentary on leaving the church and the impact that it had on her career and mental health, not to mention the extreme levels of harassment. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend.

Is it really fair to expect someone who dedicated their life to music to potentially destroy their ability to succeed in this industry? Is it fair to expect her to leave when her entire family will have to cut her out of their life permanently? Is it fair to ask her to undergo continuous harassment and threats to her life daily, potentially forever?

I just feel iffy about dog piling on someone who could be suffering silently, especially since they aren’t publicly recruiting for the church or singing their graces.

You keep calling her a rape apologist, but where is your proof? Apparently all she did was show up to one pretrial court appearance for Danny Masterson, to supposedly support him as his (at the time) friend. Which she fully admitted to on Instagram:

“I’m new to so many of you, and I wanted to clear the air about something that happened a while back.

“Several years ago, I was asked to support someone I considered a friend at a court appearance, and went to one early hearing as an observer. Soon after, I realized I shouldn’t have. I always try to see the good in people, and I misjudged him. I have never spoken with him since.

“Unimaginable details emerged and he was later found guilty.

“To say it as clearly as possible: I do not condone abuse or violence against women, and I empathize with the victims of these crimes.”

But that's it, as far as I've been able to tell. And like I said the first time you brought this up: If she had continued to support him throughout his trial or afterwards, if she had defended him publicly during the trial or after his conviction, or had blamed the victims/accused them of lying, etc... Any of the things rape apologia actually involves, then I could understand her being called a rape apologist. But I'll be honest, I seriously don't understand how her going to that one preliminary trial date has permanently condemned her in so many people's eyes. And as it stands, this whole thing feels pretty witch hunty, IMO.

So if you're going to bring this up every single time Linkin Park is mentioned from now on, you should at least back up your statements with something more.

I personally don't see how her potentially being a Scientologist really matters either. The Catholic church still does plenty of horrible shit on the regular, as does the Mormon church, and lots of southern Baptists churches, and they're all a lot more harmful on a far larger scale. I'm queer so the beliefs those institutions push regarding LGBT+ rights directly affects me, but I still don't write off every artist of Catholic or Mormon or Baptist faith. If an artist themself does something awful, I totally understand taking a stand against them. I can't separate art from artist either, and have stopped consuming several artist's content in those cases (e.g. most recently with Neil Gaiman). However, guilt by mere association, or disowning an artist purely because of their faith is taking it way too far for me.

But you do you. If you want to write someone off because they're a Scientologist, then there is nothing I can do to stop you. Although I would appreciate it if you stopped calling her a rape apologist in every Linkin Park topic unless you find something more substantial to back that up than her going to that one pretrial date.

I'm not disagreeing with you as the following remarks might seem, because I know you aren't saying anything contrary, I just thought it was relevant to what you said, so more like I'm adding my similar perspective to yours.

I get why Scientology might rate differently than established religions, and some of those religions vary quite a bit in terms of how they are practiced, I just don't know that I would condemn someone for following Scientology without knowing how they actually practice it. I think that's along the lines of what you were saying as well. I don't necessarily even consider Scientology a religion like those other ones, which could be a bias of mine or a misunderstanding of what defines a religion, but I still understand that regardless of how I see it, the other person who is following that sees it that way.

If proof comes out that she goes around doing more of the abhorrent things that other Scientologists are known for, then those behaviors would be unsupportable, but if she somehow manages to otherwise lead a life that isn't personally harming others then I wouldn't hold her religion against her. I don't think people would support that for established religions like Islam or Catholicism, and again I don't even consider Scientology to be as 'legitimate' as those and it does seem more like a cult, but I understand that people who are in it may hold onto it similar to how other people hold onto their established religions.

      Never again.

(I know professional singers practice techniques to scream/sing without shredding their vocal cords, but I think it still takes a toll over time.)
