FromSoft hasn't let me down yet since the early days of Dark Souls. I'll be betting this will be a banger of a game even if the premise seems odd. And it only seems odd because it throws caution to the winds and just becomes a boss rush, but I'd argue that cooperative boss fights are their bread and butter just as much as anything else.
While Dark Souls 1 had impeccable level and world design, that's not what got people interested in the first place (it may have kept them there though!), what made Dark Souls so great was its difficult semi-cooperative world. This looks to be more of that.

I've always appreciated their style of philosophy when approaching a new game: Pick one aspect and pull that to the fore. Sekiro had parrying, Dark Souls had defense, Armored Core had speed, and Bloodborne had aggression. It has worked well for them to make every game feel familiar and fresh within the same framework. This one deviates from the formula by reusing a preexisting approach and changing the goal. That may not sit well with people, and I'm not entirely sure if it'll grip me. Like @DynamoSunshirt, I also prefer the solo, methodical style of play.

Being not much of a lore-andy I don't mind the random NK drop in the video, -a spin-off doesn't necessarily change the existing canon from DS3- it just makes me wonder how this is going to play out.

Long story short: Tentatively excited. And enough goodwill that FromSoft can release a turd without souring everything else.

I think this is a good perspective, and one that I ought to mentally hold onto as I learn more about this. FS has built up a ton of goodwill, and even if this entry isn’t to my liking, as long as future games don’t continue the trend, I shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

I gotta say, I'm... a little thrown off by this? Does anybody else feel weird about this? I never thought I'd be one to be wary of a FromSoftware release, but this almost feels weirdly close to an asset-flip mod. I'm sure it will still be good and fun to play, but I can't help but think about the timing with FromSoftware's recent acquisition, and the fact that this seems like the sort of thing people will gobble up simply because "Elden Ring" is attached to it. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid.

Earlier FromSoftware game spoiler (and very surprising spoiler for this game too, I guess)

But like, seriously. WTF is the Nameless King doing here? Excuse me? Is this like a kid playing in his bathtub with different toys from his favorite series?

I think dismissing the game as an asset flip is a little reductive. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is one of the highest rated games of this year, and it is quite literally an asset flip [1] (for the matter, so was Majora's Mask, which is considered one of the greatest video games of all time). The development cycle for AAA video games is already too bloated, and expecting developers to recreate assets from scratch exacerbates that issue for very little gain.

Ultimately, what will decide the success of this game is whether it's fun. This game is essentially a hack-and-slash rougelike(/rougelite?) with Dark Souls roots. Considering the popularity of both the roguelike and Soulslike genres, this game seems like a pretty safe bet.

Personally, my concern is whether the game will be fun playing with randoms, since I expect (like many others) that it could be hard to coordiante a session with friends. Alternatively, here's to hoping there's a (balanced) solo option.

      1. "A Japanese crime game series wins hearts with kind, heroic masculinity." The Washington Post.. Excerpt below:

The secret to “Like a Dragon’s” distinctive style, its creators say, comes from the studio’s workflow. Unlike other game studios that ramp up budgets and work time for a few complicated games, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio releases many titles covering one story. (Compare RGG’s seven new games since 2018 with Rockstar Games, which has released only “Red Dead Redemption 2” in that time.)

“If you take a ‘GTA’ or ‘Assassin’s Creed,’ those companies’ big marketing copy is ‘Oh, a new city with completely new gameplay,’ and they almost reinvent a large portion of the game,” said RGG Studio Director Masayoshi Yokoyama through an interpreter. “Most games these days aren’t necessarily upgrades of the previous as much as they are complete reboots.”

RGG Studio has achieved its steady output by recycling work from previous games, including years-old animation cycles. Most games revolve around the fictional Tokyo district of Kamurocho, modeled after the real-life Kabukicho area, allowing repeated use of textures of buildings and streets.

“We take on an approach that builds on the previous version,” Yokoyama said. “That comes more from a drama or movie type of development, linear media content. ... I don’t think many companies are doing this with video games. I would argue it’s probably only us.”

Don’t get me wrong; I still have high hopes for the game, and I agree that it is far more than an asset-flip. But IMO it’s still hard for me to ignore the appearance of a major boss that was 100% lifted from another entry in a separate series.

TBH I probably wouldn’t have batted an eye over this if it hadn’t come on the heels of the announcement of FromSoftware’s acquisition. I suppose I’m just incredibly paranoid. FS is my very favorite studio, in no small part because they have always seemed to be interested first and foremost in creating the game they want to create, not following the latest fads.

In short, I’m still excited; it just spooks me when this game is one of the very first entries in their oeuvre that seems to buck that trend, right after an announcement that suggests that they are under new management who may (or may not) be interested in squeezing the cash cow to the best of their abilities. And in this world of tired re-hashes and endless sequels in lieu of trying anything original, what would be the easiest way to make a quick buck if you owned a studio like FromSoftware? Easy - put together a game that combines a boss rush, elements of games like Fortnite, and hardcore nostalgia (from multiple successful series, let alone this one).

I felt the same. Feels like a low effort cash grab or an attempt at a 'live service'-type game. I don't understand the positive reactions to the big 'reveal' from your spoiler. I want to explore a carefully crafted & atmospheric world, not grind the same enemies over and over in thoughtless randomly generated levels. The concept reminds me of the horrible chalice dungeons from Bloodborne.

I hope that we're wrong- some of the new enemies did look cool- but I'll be waiting to read the reviews a few weeks after release on this one.

It did feel cheap in a way that none of their other games ever have, but I also feel like there is demand for this type of product. There is a very dedicated, multiplayer focused section of the soul's fandom. I personally don't think there should be, but it objectively exists. There's not really any harm done with a smaller side project.

So Elden Ring Fortnite. Not my speed, since I play solo, offline, and mostly focus on deliberate exploration, improving my build, and min/maxing each NG cycle. But maybe fun for fast-paced co-op lovers.

I'm not sure that "Elden Ring Fortnite" is an accurate summary of that video, or at least, that's not the impression I had from watching it. The only similarities to Fortnite appear to be the relatively short sessions (~45 minutes, assuming you make it to the level 3 boss) and the gradually shrinking map. But that seems to be it? Fromsoftware is promising that it won't be a live service game.

I imagine this game will play more like Warhammer: Vermintide II or (co-op) Dead Cells. Of course, these both differ greatly from the Elden Ring, but Fromsoftware has proved itself capable in non-Soulslike genres too, most recently Armored Core VI.

Sure, but the "in that regard" refers to the play duration and the shrinking map. Honestly I took that parenthetical as a throwaway line serving only as a setup for a joke ("more medieval forts and knights, and considerably less TikTok dances"), not as a serious comparison. Fortnite is better known for its live-service elements and its PVP battle royale game mode, neither of which are featured in this spinoff. The author could have just as easily compared the game to PUBG, but I wouldn't have considered that a particularly accurate description, either.

So, probably like many, watching the trailer I was excited but the more I learned about it the less enthused I got. Some folks played a build in Japan. My takeaway was that it's like a sort of b-tier, almost mod project type thing. Pick a hero (no builds), plop down on a map, the night thing is a barrier that pushes you toward a boss, you run fast, pick up loot (with colored rarities), raise some stats/gain levels in a simplified way, fight a boss, do it again. The combat is way sped up, with those new features like mantling to help speed up navigation. The map is supposed to be fixed (as in, basic layout is static, with layers of procedural elements/constraints), but it is nothing like wandering around in the original title. 3 player coop, no pvp.

Gonna be real it comes off like a mod project to me, and at least personally I'd probably put a few mods well above it with respect to the concepts being put together. I am never a fan of smashing together a bunch of stuff across a franchise, imo it's dull as hell when folks do that. The whole thing comes off dull in a way I just did not expect from this studio. Just gotta hope it's a weird small team project and not a signal for what's in store.

I read I think on reddit that it would be a standalone game? I don't know it sounds kind of fun, it reminds me of Kirby air ride a little, except the lack of pvp which I am honestly okay with. I think it will be a fun little side game but I don't expect it to be a massive game that changes everything. Maybe it is just them exploring a new concept? I don't think it will be monumental but I think it will be quite fun!

This game though? I think it's going to be passing me by. I know these games have always been capable of jolly co-operation and invasions but I never use these features (though, I do like white phantoms and messages).

I can't see me buying a co-op game though. Feels like some kind of squad shooter / battle royale squished into the elden ring world. No thanks.

So while I'm a bit sketched out by it feeling cash-grabby, I'll withhold judgement for a while. I can see it being fun in a boss-rushy way. I'm not sure that I'm going to get any friends to play this with me.

This kinda sounds like my dream game right now. A rouguelike Elden Ring game sounds awesome.

I'm a big fan of the multiplayer changes in this. I love Elden Ring. I've beat it many times solo and with friends. But whenever I play with friends, we always play with the Seamless Coop mod. The multiplayer out of the box is not fun for a game like Elden Ring. The multiplayer actively punishes you for exploring. You have to re-summon friends if you go to a new section. No one can ride on Torrent when multiplayer is on. You have to craft a consumable all the time to summon your friends. It just makes multiplayer tedious. I'm happy to see that they are doing away with that in this new game.

I'm also super big on the new rouguelike elements they are playing with. Different enemies, different item drops, different bosses.. Sounds like a good way to keep the game fresh. I started a randomizer run with my buddies and it's like a brand new game. Super unbalanced, but definitely a fun experience.

I do not understand why they so consistently and steadfastly deny this is a problem. Luckily there's a multiplayer mod that solved all of this. Seamless Coop for anyone interested.
