Points saved before March 24 won't vanish right away at least. It says they will stick around for 12 months after being issued, same as it works now. You can also redeem points on physical games released within a year before March 24. So March 24, 2026 is when they'll disappear entirely.

Also, this email came at 2 am local time. So I imagine this will be a rough start to the morning for some people.

Games for the switch are already so expensive, and I'm not just talking about first party games. Even third party games available on several platforms are almost always more expensive on Nintendo's store. Games that spend their entire existence on sale on the Xbox store might see a sale on Nintendo once or twice a year. It's honestly ridiculous, and I barely ever buy games on the switch for this reason.

Yes, one of the reasons I got a Steam Deck was that I simply ran the numbers and realized that, over time, I'd probably save far more money buying games for my Steam Deck than I would for the Switch. I haven't actually bothered to check, but I'm almost entirely certain I actually have, ultimately, saved more than $300 in the year that I've owned my Steam Deck, buying games for it that I would have otherwise bought for Switch.

Same. Love my switch and my steam deck. And I’ll buy the switch 2 on release. But other than switch exclusive games (ie first party Nintendo games) I won’t use it for anything else

Yeah, my Switch was worth it for the 1st party titles alone, but ever since I've got my Steam Deck, the vast majority of my purchases have been on it instead.

I wonder how much of that is the cost of the medium and how much is just Nintendo getting their cut. Nintendo is famous for their games never going on sale, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just them saying that they would just like to make a bit more money.

(I’m actually not super bitter about their pricing, though if the reason for third party games being more expensive ends up being “Nintendo tax”, that changes the calculus.

I was originally going to say that third party games on my wishlist tend to go on sale a fair bit and usually for the same value as they would on Steam, but then I remembered my tastes are mostly smaller indie games. Most top out at $20 at regular price, and they usually go on sale for half or $7.99. I've even snagged some games for $2-3, those are the ones I paid for exclusively with gold points.

I think part of it is probably some policy by Nintendo. I distantly recall them establishing a minimum sale price of $1.99 due to some games getting put on sale for super cheap (like a dollar or even one cent) so they'd end up on the best seller list. Wouldn't be surprised if they limited sales compared to other stores for the same reason, make sure no one can game the system.

And this is why I've never purchased a Switch. The hardware itself isn't too expensive, but I'm unwilling to pay $60 for a game that came out in 2017 and I'm unwilling to rebuy games for a higher price than I did on Steam already.

Ultimately, I have a 21-year old library on Steam, so it just makes sense to stick with everything I've got on PC. Breath of the Wild is a neat game, but I've gotten no more fun out of it than many other games I already own.
