I jest somewhat. As someone who primarily plays SP games, in part because of the abusive and/or morally objectionable people who play them (d.g., Star Citizen, if you can accept the premise that it js a game, full of hardcore libertarian firearm fanatics), this is an interesting adaptation.

I actually brought that up on the forums lol. A rare npc proc named Leeroy that aggros everything in the raid until you kill him and when you do he only drops chicken.

You're unfortunately spot on calling out Star Citizen. I really like the game, but global chat can get extremely toxic and hateful. I stayed away from orgs/player groups for a while, but I did...

I stayed away from orgs/player groups for a while, but I did manage to find players that have similar values as me and a decent chill org. The wider SC population (and bugs) makes me hesitant to recommend it to most of my friends but I haven't found any game that hits me the same way.

Oh, I didn't realize this his EA!

I played maybe 8 to 10 hours of the demo several months ago, getting all the way through the demo island and as a person who loved EverQuest back in 1999, it really evokes those feelings, but compressed. Levels come pretty quick, the world is relatively small, but it all feels very cool to play and it's fun to see the NPCs level up alongside you and become regular fixtures of your play sessions.

If you're in doubt, try the demo and you'll see exactly what it's all about.

What a wild idea to make a single player MMO experience like this. I mean I totally get it, I think I'd enjoy it too, but this is not what I saw coming in the year of our Lord 2025.
I wonder if this kind of thing will become a trend, especially with god damn gen AI.

Honestly, I want small scale community hosted servers to become a thing. Like your favourite steamer could start hosting servers for your favourite games and their community is the game community. Tildes could do the same thing.
I think that's where the gold mine is, though it does really push the Internet segregation and bubbles further.

Edit: I realize I didn't explain my thoughts very well there. I know we already do community dedicated servers as a reasonably normal thing for a lot of games.
What I mean is community servers being first party content as an evolution of the mostly dead server browsers of ye olde times.
You'd not have "official servers" but communities would be expected to start and run their own servers with optional advertising. I dunno how it would evolve from there but I like the idea of it all being baked into the client as a "play with your people" kinda thing.

For some time now I’ve thought that there’s a considerable swath of unexplored territory here. The idea becomes particularly compelling if one adds into the mix a robust set of mapmaking tools and makes it dead simple to spin up servers sharing custom content… think something along the lines of the Warcraft III custom map system, but for an MMO, so keeping the server running and persisting state is easy.

I think it’d be very popular. Even now there’s a surprising number of private WoW servers that serve custom-made content despite the community-developed reverse-engineered tools one has to use to do so being extremely rough around the edges and unpleasant to use. A game that smooths all that out would only be that much more popular.

Yeah exactly, there's so much untapped potential there. It makes me a little sad when I think about it because the gaming industry could have embraced community servers and community content like the War craft, Arma, Half Life, etc etc days.
Instead we embraced matchmaking and making money off children to make paid mods/content for popular video games.

Another (imo better) option for a single player mmo is running your own wow server with bots.

The bots are quite capable and you can control them pretty well via macros to clear raid content. You can also have random bots populate the world running around questing and available to group up with or you can just spawn them in on demand. There are a few different options these days, I played through a vanilla era server with CMangos but apparently Azerothcore is easier to setup if you want a wotlk server.
