For what it's worth, I recently built a SFF PC. I'm running Windows 11 (mainly gaming+dev) and now very commonly show 0-1% CPU usage while idle.

It does take power-user knowledge levels, and you're right that you never know what an update could change or enable. For me, it's about the same or slightly less effort than maintaining an updated Linux box.

Either way, Apple software historically had better usability and default options that just made more sense. I hacked Snow Leopard into a netbook, and the biggest hurdle after install was launching apps with 80% magnification by default.

Hopefully they can spend some dev effort on stability and maximizing the potential hardware benefits.

Have you read Piranesi? It captures a similar feeling for me, something like a metaphorical/mythical concept existing in physical space and the effect it has on people.

Yeah I actually added that in because it was a parenthetical in the original. I felt that if it was important enough to slip in, it might be better to retain it. Mostly to cover the bases if spamming happens.

Basically, I tried to stay away from too much prescriptive language, and a little more on vibes/productive discussion. While keeping it as short as possible.

You are encouraged to share interesting content in good faith, and not as a vector for advertising or otherwise self-serving purposes. Original content such as your site, project, or channel is allowed in moderation, provided you're contributing towards the community.

Tildes is a community, not an audience to be exploited, and we expect you to participate as an integral part of it.

What about something like this? Trying to boil things down and take a little more from the original. As well as put the important qualifiers before anything that says OC is "allowed." Might come across as more firm, maybe because of shortening/rewording sentences.

One of their playtest sessions was on Manhattan Island (NYC) which is pretty small but dense.

Click to expand minor spoiler. Randomize causes the new, random question to be marked off the board, since it was the one actually asked. It could be completely useless or still useful information, depending on the selection and what phase they're in.

Veto means the hider doesn't answer, and doesn't receive the reward. That question is marked off the board normally.

Any "marked off" question can be asked again for double the cost. This seems like a brute-force safety to ensure the hider can't dodge a question forever, but at a potentially high cost (time bonuses, curses, etc).

What you're describing is also common with my friends. One friend saw the birthday cake they got her at work and said, "Oh wow, it's so gay!" because it was decorated with a rainbow (a good/amusing thing to her). Her straight cis coworkers, mostly women, didn't know how to react and looked uncomfortable.

It can be a fine line. A straight friend once jokingly said, "We're so gay...not that there's anything wrong with that," referring to our close friendship and a Seinfeld quote. I wasn't personally offended, but a gay acquaintance that didn't know him as well was annoyed/upset by it.

Another (deeper) configuration to check is the BIOS for RAM settings. Motherboards usually work stock but don't enable XMP (aka advanced memory settings).

If you have modern high-speed RAM, it's worth checking profiles and matching the RAM's stock timing. Just get memtest86 to verify no errors, even if Windows runs.

The easiest explanation for that is that they know of the concept of withholding information, e.g. a "healthy fear" of others. They didn't expect or initially understand the concept where communication is not complete and absolute when it occurs, e.g. metaphor (indirect meaning), and deception (communicating falsehoods).

Yes, it was explained. I can give the most broad answer without spoiling any huge plot point. But it's a small spoiler that explains things from their perspective.

Spoiler for the novel series The San Ti have monitoring stations and people monitoring for signals, similarly to Earth. The original transmission was picked up, but with no way to pinpoint the exact position. It would be from some window of the sky, but from any number of stars.

By receiving a second transmission while monitoring the general area, they could pinpoint the source and find Sol.

Another aspect of this, is that an "AI" still has a foundation in the intelligence of the creator. The minds that created it work far differently than ours, and the AI produced may be closer to their experience.

So maybe it had no "desire" to subjugate all systems, because the goal was to keep the hearth warm without exposing the truth. More extreme but highly individual solutions were also used, but the exact method was not verifiable outside of a single observer. There may be other criteria for why some progress was halted via experiments versus direct action, which they know from their own advancements.

If the AI did have the desire and capability to spread and control everything, what would stop it from turning on its creators?

For reference, trying to keep out direct spoilers. I read the series a few years ago and finished the show.

Changing one word doesn't help, unless the person using that word only means to use it in English.

Yes, I am not talking about changing the entire Spanish language. Just discussing the conversion into an English word, and purely as a hypothetical to challenge the "why" aspect. Would Latin men be averse to being described (in English) as Latina? If so, is the non-grammatical gender in Spanish transferred to English? Why?

Male is default, but not because misogyny.

Again, I was talking about the use in English.

I don't know the linguistic history of Spanish. I do think that using the masculine form of a word as the "default" reinforces patriarchal concepts. Whether that effect is larger or smaller for Spanish vs English is hard to quantify.

Here's a link to a discussion about what I'm referring to with using "she" as the default, universal singular, instead of "he." There was definitely a movement towards the feminine, especially in academic writing, most likely as a course-correction for the seemingly patriarchal nature of defaulting to "he."

    https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/28508/reason-for-the-current-trend-to-use-she-as-the-gender-neutral-pronoun

Edit: and if using Latina implies he is feminine, then there is more to the grammatical gender than purely form. The response I received suggested grammatical gender was misinterpreted as gendered language, yet you're saying that it's correctly interpreted to be masculine and feminine.

I'm actually on my own journey of gender, probably most aligned as nonbinary but still comfortable with he/him and they equally. I definitely understand the desire to push back against traditional assumptions of masculinity (and femininity), but prescriptive language changes without a basis in colloquial/shared usage seem like a recipe for contention.
