It's by no means done yet, as the organizer said themselves; there's potential for phantom votes, or invalid ones. He thinks they're actually closer to ~700k votes on the EU poll. So to be really sure, he's hoping to target 1.4M votes.

Rossmann has been one of the big YouTubers in the Right to Repair movement for years, so he's got real experience in this flavor of activism. He had some tough-love comments toward Ross Scott about how the priorities in your personal life will conflict with a movement's needs.

Although I don’t agree with some points, he provided a lot more substance on where this movement could go wrong and without being an ass about it.

For example, I feel that he focused too much on “how are we going to do this for existing games” rather than on “how are we going to develop future games with this in mind”. And the movement is about the latter, it’s not meant to be retroactive.

But again, I recommend hearing him out

Louis is currently streaming to YouTube and had Ross Scott on. Ross was able to clear up the retroactive argument with him.

I think pirate software, ironically, saved the movement

I wonder if the people calling him out over this were hoping for exactly this outcome. Controversy gets eyeballs where honest appeals to reason don't.

Spite is one hell of a motivator for people. Thankfully the initiative was able to get some Yang for the Yin.

I don't want to be too doomer, but I don't see it getting much more than the obligatory parlimentary hearing before being buried. Maybe if we did this pre-COVID there'd be some chance of a champion arising for such issues.

But today? Housing is in shambles, economy is still recovering, tarriff disruptions, immigration is red hot even in the EU. The ones who don't care never cared, the ones who may care are fighting a raging inferno right nowand it feels like this is the equivalent of asking the firefighter to heat your burrito.

We'll get to it eventually, but I can understand if there are other priorities.

I'm glad it got the needed signatures and I hope the EU takes this seriously! Given the vast number of gamers out there, I figured the main roadblock to this petition would be just spreading awareness the petition exists.

I wish it the best of luck, but I'm also not in the best mood to be thinking about how to make games more "consumer friendly" as me and tens, hundreds of thousands of workers are being kicked out. We devs take the blame for decisions made by executives, and when explaining how this may not be trivial we are being told we shill for corporate... the ones who didn't give us the time to do things the right way.

This is a more general aspect than just games, I guess. People love blaming the workers for the decisions of billionaires. I can only imagine the actual network engineers who spend weeks preparing pitches trying to strive for abilities to host servers and other consumer-friendly techniques, only to get dunked on from those above who don't see dollar bills, and those below who think they are an incompetent dev who can't code right.

I can see why the average game dev tenure is 5 years after spending some 8 or 9 years here.

Understandably so. My condolences to you and your colleagues. As much as it's disheartening to see the art itself destroyed when it no longer makes multimillionaires more millions, it's disgusting to see the same happen to the people who created it.

The games industry as a whole and especially its leadership are due a reckoning for the way they treat artists and their art.
