I have almost 1000 hours played in Total War: Wahammer 1, 2 & 3, 500+ hours in Blood Bowl 1 & 2, and Warhammer Fantasy isn't even my favorite Warhammer setting... 40k is. And so I've spent countless hours playing (and replaying) pretty much every 40k game there is to play, including 150+ hours in Rogue Trader (which I highly highly recommend for oldschool CRPG fans). So I'm really really excited for this, and hope they don't screw it up!

p.s. I wish they had shown a bit more gameplay in the trailer, but I guess that's to be expected for just an initial announcement trailer.

I feel like this is a dumb question given that it’s a CRPG, but is there a way to play Rogue Trader without getting heavy into combat? I’m absolutely in love with the “domestic 40k” universe (thanks, Eisenhorn books!), but I’m generally a casual story mode gamer. Would love to try this game but if it’s just snippets of story between lots of combat I fear I’d hate it.

The story is the highlight of the game, IMO. It's great! But the game is still very combat heavy overall. And while you can't entirely skip the combat, there is a "Story Mode" where the game difficulty is cranked way way down so you can just plow through all the encounters to get to the next story bit. Although I suspect on Story Mode, rather than 150 hours, it would probably only take about 50-75 hours to complete... but that's still pretty substantial.

Edit: You could actually skip the combat entirely using Toy Box (I think CTRL+Q kills every enemy on the screen) or using some other cheat specific mod. I would recommend playing with Toy Box anyways though, TBH. It has some great QoL tweaks, and even allows you to have all the companions active in your party at the same time so you don't have to leave any behind for missions, which means you get to see all the story elements and dialogue involving them for those missions.

Tank the difficulty would make it mostly a formality orrr maybe just watch a stream of it?

I honestly thought we wouldn't get any game play, so I'm happy they showed a bit in the trailer. Definitely need to see more. My biggest worry is they will somehow break things making it also work on console.

And yeah, Creative Assembly's track record is spotty at best, so I seriously hope they actually take their time and do this one right. 🤞

And agreed, CAs recent track record is not reassuring. This is the game I want, but I'm not sure they will be able to deliver it. TWW3 was a step down in quality from TWW2. At least they have a new engine for 40K!

Ah, lol, yeah it totally makes sense you would do that in multiplayer. I don't know why I didn't think of that! Probably because I almost never autoresolve battles when I play on my own, unless it's going to be a really really one-sided battle... but even then, sometimes it's fun to play those battles out to see how far your army has progressed since the beginning. :P

TWW3 was a step down in quality from TWW2.

I know everyone online says that about it, but TBH I don't actually agree with them. I personally think it's the best of the three in terms of overall gameplay which is why I have by far the most playtime in it compared to the previous two. I also absolutely love its massive campaign map and the new DLC races. And as someone who owned the previous games and all their DLC, I also think it was pretty cool of them to not force people to buy the same DLC all over again to unlock the previous games' races/heroes.

I was mostly referring to TW: Three Kingdoms when talking about their spotty history. Them breaking and then abandoning Three Kingdoms genuinely pissed me off, since I was really really enjoying it up until then. :/ Not to mention their history of releasing totally broken games at launch (Shogun 2, Rome 2, etc), and really mediocre, blatant cash-grab games (Saga: Britannia & Saga: Troy).

Yeah, generally for the sake of time, you auto-resolve all battles outside of really important battles. It's also fun to occasionally share units with the other people playing. Offloading your Cavalry or other micro intensive units to an equally competent co-op partner makes for some fun battles. Not doing that would make it pretty boring sitting there waiting for the other players battles to end. I have never found someone who actually wanted to fight every battle in co-op, but as long as you make that clear heading in I wouldn't be opposed. I'm an only child, I'm good at entertaining myself.

I understand your sentiment. I don't agree, but I understand it and like you I have way more hours in TWW3 so it's not like the step down on quality kept me from playing, especially once IE became available.

The sieges haven't been good in either game, but I really disliked them in TWW3. I hated settlement battles to the point I modded them out and later modded out sieges all together.

My favourite faction is HE, who are not as fun to play in TWW3. I eventually found my people (love Tzeentch and to your point, the Chaos Dwarf DLC is basically the most fun I have had with any DLC). I hope the newest DLC restores my love playing HE. I haven't had enough time with it to decide.

CA ignoring game breaking bugs or dialing to actually fix them is my main concern. TWW2 wasn't perfect but it felt less janky. The fact that I have to mod TWW3 to make parts of it playable is unfortunate. I really hope the new engine fixes their terrible LOS issues with guns.

Regardless, looks like we will probably both be there on release day. Fingers crossed CA can pull it off!

I'm not a huge fan of them either. But that's been true of pretty much every Total War game for me, so they're the one thing I actually do auto-resolve if I can do so without losing too many troops.

Ew. Goodie two-shoes! ;) I almost always play the baddies, and Skaven are by far my fav faction.

Yeah, in fairness, I also love the Skaven, well specifically Ikit Claw. Mowing down charging Calvary and my own slaves? Yes yes! I don't know if I really know how to play other Skaven factions if I don't have endless guns and artillery.

I have the most fun with ranged units and magic and ranged units and magic were both better in TWW2. I guess that's probably my main complaint. It's probably why I have enjoyed Tzeentch and Chaos Dwarfs the most in TWW3.

But for real this engine is so stale. The fact that they had to remove naval combat from the majority of the games is just silly. And the pathing and cavalry mass calculations is STILL worse than medieval 2! So I'm really hopeful they've learned and improved in this case. The zoom into and out of that planet at the end is intriguing but probably just cinematic nonsense.

Yeah they also have run into so many line of sight issues for guns. If that's not fixed 40k will be DOA.

40k is my preferred setting so im excited but i am also reticent because i remember the rome 2 release and how easily CA can fumble at the height of their powers. Cautious optimism.

I have still not forgiven them for breaking Three Kingdoms TW with a patch and then immediately abandoning the fucking game.

I'm interested, but I do know this studio has a reputation to disappoint. I'll definitely let this one come out first and let everyone else tell me if it's good or not.
