Having gone into this blind and without much Souls-like experience, the controls are tight and combat is appropriately challenging. IMO, the biggest flaw is that the nearest-neighbor upscaled 144p is quite ugly and shipping without a built-in CRT shader (e.g. Animal Well) was a significant miss; adding one using ReShade makes it a lot more visually pleasant.
Pedantic here, but you'd probably be looking for LCD filters since the visuals are cribbing from GBC aesthetics like Link's Awakening DX. Agreed, though, wish it came with something.

Or even better, playing it on CRT! I've loaded it on my Batocera + CRT script system and it looks gorgeous. If only there was a 4:3 option, it would be perfect. I agree that sometimes the game can...

I agree that sometimes the game can feel a bit unfair, even compared to a Dark Souls game, but I still enjoy it a lot.
It's finally here! Any impressions yet from launch players? I'm going to wait because my backlog's too big, but I loved Shovel Knight and the Next Fest demo for this, so I am hoping to play it...

My review so far is that it's Fucking Hard. You have to really like old school difficulty and the dark souls formula, but if you do you'll have a great time. The game also has a built in "modifiers" menu that basically acts as a built-in gameshark or action replay cheat menu.
Editing to say that really only the first few hours were very hard. After the first dungeon you POWER UP and I haven't had much trouble since then.

I didn't like Shovel Knight that much so this wasn't on my radar, but this is crack cocaine. I'm at like 30 something hours already. I can't put it down. Help.

New game from the developers of Shovel Knight!

Dark Souls formula? You mean I can grind out levels for endless hours to get overpowered and overcome my abject lack of skill?! Sign me up.
I do think that would work on this game

Game Informer produced a documentary on the game a few years ago too https://youtu.be/Z6WWGkVf3uU
