Worth mentioning, since I've seen some confusion about this: the trailer announced two Cuphead games: a hand-drawn mainline title that for now we can call Cuphead 2, and a spinoff game with 8-bit pixel graphics called Mighty Cuphead Adventure.

Since the spinoff is paying tribute to an entirely new era of entertainment (the 80s instead of the 30s), it would be interesting to see if Cuphead 2 is based on cartoons from another era, like the 70s or 90s or 2000s.

I think we can interpret this to be a slight dig at AI, especially considering that the in-video host specifically uses the awkwardly phrased term "drawn by hands". It also explains why this game will take a long time to make, just like its predecessor, something that a ravenous consumer base fails to understand (but are more readily willing to accept an enhanced "drawn by machines" alternative).

I didn't even think of it as a dig at AI, just a humorous nod to the fact it's made using actual, hand-drawn animation on paper. Even without taking AI slop into account, barely any animation is made by drawing on actual paper these days.

I bet you the hot new marketing thing will be to play up the hands on/human aspect of making video games: "artisanal", "coffee-powered", "labor of love and worth it". Maybe AI will make it back into the hearts and minds of consumers, but that will be for the next generation of kids once we can get through the uncanny valley.

Based on the video, it looks like the graphics are more like PC Engine or SNES than NES/SMS level. So yes, 8-bit pixel but possibly tens or hundreds of colors on the screen. cool
