I'll be back soon - perhaps this weekend. Until then:

    • Barring a couple of builds, I've finished building building exteriors in the New Town district of Słonecznikowo. Obviously, I still need to construct small structures (e.g. kiosks) and parks + add exterior details (e.g. shopfronts, building entrances, glass on windows) but that's for later.
    • I'm now going to start constructing the Old Town district. I gathered around 60 shulkers of terracotta already... I
    • @IsildursBane constructed a bridge connecting the Old Town and the New Town. He apparently got really into it and also added some destroyed bridge support pillars in another location and is also planning to add a second bridge elsewhere(?)
    • I built a train station. Kind of.
    • I also went full meta and built a building-under-construction, AKA "The Szkieletor". Also a construction crane. And somehow I did not fall down and die. While building it.
    • I probably did more things but I forgor at this point
    • The Poland-Tildetown line has been added to the bluemap by @creesch

I have been slowly refining the first bridge. I have struggled with getting the arches looking correct, so I have been doing the process of taking a break, then coming back and trying something out, then letting it sit before taking another look with fresh eyes. Part of that is because I built the tops of the arches out of half slabs, so that it prevents mobs from spawning, but also makes the support cables awkward to join up. I think last night I finally solved the arch, so need to replicate it throughout the rest of the bridge. Building with smooth red sandstone has been a fantastic block to build with, and makes me frustrated on how rare the block is in the game.

As for the ruined bridge and the planned future bridge, a lot of my reasoning behind it was that it seemed unrealistic that the old town district only had a single modern bridge to access it. My inspiration for the ruined bridge foundation is that at least in my experience in western Canada, it is not uncommon to come across a bridge (especially in more remote areas) where you can see the ruins of the previous bridge nearby. The ruins that I have seen IRL have consisted of parts of the bridge foundation still standing, as well as you can normally see where the road used to run as an approach to the bridge. So I thought it is a simple way to build up history in the area. I also am thinking of making an older looking bridge somewhere else. I want to help create a sense that this city has a history and has evolved over time.

If you're not worried about duping, we have infinite red sand to make more.

I updated my nether tunnel! I did my own redstone for the station and it worked out better than expected. To use this track all you have to do is walk up and get into the waiting minecart, a sculk sensor will detect that you've gotten into the cart and power the rails to get you moving, then shortly after you leave the station, a new minecart is autocrafted and dispensed onto the track to wait for the next use. At each end of the track the minecart is automatically broken by a cactus and disposed of in lava. The redstone is my own design and it's about as small as possible I think, so I'm pretty proud of it. Feel free to copy for other stations if desired.

Also sidenote: I love seeing honecomb blocks used effectively in a build. It's one of my favorite blocks, but it can be hard to integrate the texture without it being too overwhelming. It looks great as a contrast to the very flat concrete!

The honeycomb block works really well with the stripped spruce and yellow terracotta. I like using the minecraft block palette website to help make good combinations of blocks for a build.

I love that website. I used it to find blocks to use for distressed sections of my terracotta buildings in Pitch.

I am making good progress on the end portal cathedral! I've finally gotten the water cleared out, for real this time. In the last thread I claimed I had done this, but it turned out I was one block short and needed to clear out one more layer around the entire perimeter.

The entire footprint is complete, and most of the lower level walls are done. The only remaining part of the clerestory is the curved section around the choir. Currently I'm focused on getting the ceiling and windows done, but it's late tonight and I've run out of diorite.

It's almost mob-proof, except I've accidentally left some space under part of the clerestory in which spiders can spawn, so that's a bit annoying. You can see one clipped through the shelves in the "Facing north" screenshot. I will need to go under there and place some slabs or something. Torches cause strange lighting glitches in the vaulted ceilings below.

Once I have everything but the north, east, west walls complete, I'll need to hop back into creative and finalize the designs for my rose windows.

Since I've got so much of the columns and clerestory up, I'm getting a bit worried it's too much white. I experimented in creative a bit with replacing some of the blocks with different grayscale/off-white colors but everything has too much contrast to my taste. I want things to feel "pristine" or something, but any texturing I try just comes across as "dirty" to me. Maybe I need to lean harder into contrast, but I really like things being bright. It makes the daylight effect really pop when someone sleeps through the night. So I think I will keep the color palette as I'd already decided and just accept that maybe contrast/texture isn't perfect.

There is a chest next to the building with the nice facade, but filled in doors from which I have acquired a handful. Some may even say a pinch of bonemeal which I will return when I set up a fire. A spit. And a lamb on a spit.

I do have to commend the spacious trading hall. I can almost feel the soft wind caressing my blocky onion head as I enter its bowels.

If you are looking for supplies, there is community storage built straight west of town, across the river. The main east/west road in town extends all the way to storage, or in the basement of town hall there is a train station, and that rail line goes directly to the transit hub, which is in the basement of community storage

Update on the City of Pitch

Bit of a smaller update this time, since a few other games have been holding my attention for the past week+.

This week I created a map for Pitch. Maps don't work underground, so I decided to do a map art. But I also wanted to place markers and have the map work like normal. So the solution was to build a 1:1 scale map at the city's coords at build height. It turned out OK, but it is off center and I'm planning to fill in the extra space once my tolerance for tedium returns.

    Semi-finished product

You didn't want to dig out the entire ceiling of the city, make the map, then place all the blocks back? Weird. :P

So I have added a small 8x furnace array at community storage. I went with a smaller array to be convenient for small jobs of a stack or two of items, since we have the 64x array at the industrial district (which there is now a dedicated transit stop for). Building the furnace array was quite tricky to squeeze in in an aesthetically pleasing manner, since storage is starting to become packed full of various utilities that were not initially planned.

I felt that after expanding the transit infrastructure to service the 64x industrial one, having a small scale one at storage would be convenient for small smelting operations. It would have a lot of potential if I expanded the input/output storage and tied it into the chunk loaders, but I do want people to use the existing 64x smelter for large operations

So I noticed that the storage system in the industrial district has broken again. My theory on the culprit is that the item sorters and the shulker loaders are too close together, so occasionally they interact, clearing the sorters filters. I have started raising up all the item piping to achieve this. The other benefit of raising up the piping is that now I will be able to extend the express line, adding a stop at the furnace array across the river.

I have also extended the Town High Speed line, so that it extends past the industrial district to include a stop by the super smelter across the river. @creesch would it be easier for me to provide coordinates for the bluemap changes of the rail line or have you use your mod to get the coords?

Since this is a short bit above ground with few corners and no elevation changes I'll be able to grab the coordinates from bluemap. I'll try to remember to do it today.
