What's a good name for my open source, tactical WW2 FPS?
I’m going to be making an fully libre, tactical, co-op, WW2 FPS in the ioquake3 engine. I need an idea for a name. Anyone have ideas?
It's going to be kind of like Day of Infamy, if you've ever played it. You're going to be working through the enemy's base (Axis or Allies, depending on which side you choose) with your friends, trying to complete an objective. You can either be stealthy, go guns blazing, or anywhere in between. There's also going to be TDM, where you either attack or defend against another team of players. I'm hoping to increase longevity by making it completely open source.
No name we can come up with will fit your project better than the one which pops into your head at 4am after spending the whole day immersed in working on it.
If you do really want one, though, some detail would help a lot. If you have an idea for what makes it different or what it's about, you can get something specifically relayed to your project and not just a generic reference to WW2.
Got it. I just update the post with more details.
How's it going with your game? Anything playable right now, even if in alpha state?
Not in development yet unfortunately. I'm going to work on a 2D Godot game before I try to make a 3D one. I want to build up a bit of experience in making video games. I probably won't start working on this game for at least a year.
A tactical FPS is a pretty ambitious project. Especially if it's your first 3D game! I wouldn't worry about coming up with a name long before the project's even started.
I was probably getting a little ahead of myself.
Personally, I think of a name for a project before doing almost anything else other than rough ideation in my head, because I need to name the directories and filenames with something.
Sounds similar to my all-time favourite game, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Its entire source code was released under GPL (I think some of the assets are still proprietary, though).
Since they're both Q3 engine, it would be cool if you made Wolf:ET maps / mods compatible with your game. There's a gigantic volume of community-made things out there you can use. It would sure save you a lot of work!
Maybe call it Adlernest (Adlerhorst) or Braundorf (Braunsdorf)?
That's a great idea! I'll see if the maps can be made compatible, but I don't think I'm going to use them for the base game, I want to make new assets. I'm also not sure if they'll work with the gameplay, but I'll try.
Those are cool names. How did you come up with them?
They are two popular community Wolf:ET maps made for competitive play (scrims).

Note, this tracker's map list is 566 pages long:

Achtung!
That's a good name. That means "danger" right (I looked it up)?
Achtung means attention!
Great video! I love linguistic stuff. It's so interesting. That's definitely one I might use.
More info on it would be useful.
Whatever it is, make sure the subtitle is "violent video games don't cause mass shootings" ...

This sounds a lot like Hell Let Loose.
I'm going for something like that. I think one of the main differentiators is that mine will be open source.
