Tildes' Valentine's Day Game Giveaway: Gaming Blind Dates!

Gaming Blind Dates Event

For Valentine's Day, the Tildes Game Gifting Group is offering up a number of "blind dates" for any gamer who is interested in trying out something new. Each gift is a game, but you won't know the game's name -- only the top 4 tags describing the game. Select the tags which most interest you, then find out the exactly who the game is once it's given to you! Hopefully it's a keeper!

How can I participate?

You may choose to:

  • gift a game/games as a blind date for others,
  • go on a gaming blind date (i.e. receive a game gift),
  • or both!

Steps to enroll:

  1. Comment either in this thread here on Tildes, or in the thread on the Steam group (if you are already a member).

  2. In your comment, identify whether you would like to gift a game, go on a gaming blind date, or both!

  3. If you are not already a member of the Tildes' Game Gifting Group on Steam, PM me with a link to your Steam profile so that I can friend and add you (the group is invite-only).

  4. If you are gifting a game, PM me or message me on Steam with the name of the game, how you will gift it (e.g. store purchase, key, etc.), and the platform it's on (if not Steam).

Timeline

You may enroll up through Thursday, February 13. Once all the participants have enrolled, the blind dates will be set up and will begin on Valentine's Day, Friday, February 14.

Additional Info

To ensure that giftees will have a good chance of liking their gifted game, we are requiring that gifted games have a combined user review score of at least 80%. You don't need to worry about getting a bad or junk game!

Games are given freely by their generous donors, and there are no strings attached or hidden catches. You ARE allowed to receive a game even if you don't gift one!

For other questions/specifics, full details are available in the event thread in the Steam group.

Note: If you do not wish to see this thread in your Tildes feed, please use the ignore function to hide it!

I honestly expected the exact opposite to happen, and was worried a lot of people were going to be disappointed by not getting a game... but it just goes to show you the generosity of the Tildes...

Will no one rid us of these turbulent games!?

I picked #12 on the list, which was this for those who haven't seen the Steam thread:

    Date #12

    @kfwyre

Turns out, it was SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell! The concept is simple, but excellently executed: You're a redneck, and Satan stole your beer. In turn, you stole his arm, and have gone to hell to get the beer back as fast as possible.

I'd spotted the game before on Steam, but it never really seemed like something that'd be very fun to me. I'd played games that lent themselves well to speedrunning (e.g. Marble it Up!), but while the game as a whole still felt really fun, I always found trying for really good times to be rather frustrating, and I figured this would be the same. In the end though? I shouldn't have asseumed, because I've played through three floors so far and it is insanely fun.

All throughout the game every mechanic I've encountered has been thoroughly solid and engaging, with loads of different ways to use them to get faster times. Restarting is utterly painless and happens instantaneously, so failing doesn't feel nearly as irritating as I expected. The goofy dialogue scattered throughout tops it all off excellently.

All in all, I'm sure I'll be playing this again seum enough! 10/10

Yeah, by my count there is currently 1 more gift than there are gift receivers so far... so there is still some room. And I will probably throw in another gift game at some point too, especially...

Some of the other gifters are also gifting multiple games, so there's plenty of open spots!

I'll include the platform compatibility with the genres. Do you want a Linux native game or would one that works well through Proton be good too?

Sounds good. I'll also include the Proton score as well, just so you can make an informed decision. I would hate for your gaming blind date to be one that you can't end up playing.

I'm a Linux user myself, so I really should have thought of doing so in the first place. It's just that Proton is so good that I pretty much take for granted that I can play mostly anything.

Seems that I can't post there until I spend at least $5 on Steam, which seems weird to me when the group is invite-only. :/ I'd like to go with #2 if posting here counts.

Thanks! I actually picked it partially because I thought you might have good taste; the tags sounded great but didn't say anything on what the gameplay was actually about. I'm currently away from my computer but it looks great, and seems light enough to run well on an iGPU.

The game is GRIS, for anyone else reading.

😊 The minimums specs say Geforce GT 430/Radeon HD 5570, which were both released in 2010, so a modern iGPU might be able to handle it.
