I have this game, and I must say as an engineer I am extremely impressed by how well the whole thing runs. Everything is super slick and fast, it's kind of amazing. The interface and responsiveness are really the key to this games success and most companies would not have been able to pull it off. I'm looking forward to playing with this more and seeing how it develops!

The challenge with this game is whether it can go from being a novelty to starting something longer term - either a whole genre about these meta games that becomes more popular or if Dreams itself becomes a staple of the industry.

    I watched Dunkey's video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rezzjJ4NtK0

He obviously takes a comedic take on the game, but his video does highlight the pros and cons of a meta game like this. You could find a gem but you have to sift through so much trash (both ironic and unironic).

In Minecraft I only played solo, so I wasn't filtering through anyone else's trash. I guess that's different because it has a nice terrain generator, so you don't have to build everything from scratch, just your own buildings.

I wonder if this game is any fun solo? Maybe we will have better reviews in a few weeks.

That's a good point, but I was mostly talking about playing games other people have made. So the Minecraft equivalent would be playing on other servers. There are obviously amazing servers and games like Hypixel and Bedwars, but there's a lot of garbage as well.

Hmm... That might be an issue for me, personally. Probably others, too. I like adding on, and revising things, rather than making from scratch always - building into the "naturally" generated terrain.

    From the article:

    From the article:

Dreams began development in 2011. Last April, the game entered “early access,” the pre-release phase during which customers can play a beta version and help shape the final product. Within three months, more than seventy thousand creations had been uploaded to Dreams’ servers. The results ranged from the experimental to various forms of pastiche. (Many builders chose to re-create scenes from their favorite films or video games.) Some players built first-person shooters or pastoral landscapes, while others created Pixar-esque animations or pieces of music, recording via the PlayStation camera’s microphone. On the eve of the game’s release, one fan stitched together a trailer, backed by a stentorian soundtrack, highlighting the variety of media that had been created. Crucially, all of it had been made without typing a single line of code.

I played this a bit with my wife the other day. There is a lot of trash to sift through-- a big reason being, as far as I can tell, that you're allowed to copy other user's creations and/or templates, so a lot of the stuff I'd see in the new queue, for example, were all barely-modified templates/games that were practically identical to one another.

That being said, when we did find original creations, they always had a charm to them akin to-- at the very least-- a student film, wherein you could tell someone put a lot of care and time into what they made, even if the result doesn't seem all that polished. We played someone's game of "Silent Hill 7," wherein you were on a plane that got taken over by the silent-hill sludge mid-way through. It was impressively done to some degree, but outright silly to another; your main character was made of basic shapes that had chest-hair and a very huge brow. The plane itself was ridiculously large with each chair being a full on recliner and a huge lounge. It was still fun-- and some degree it was in fact spooky because the story made so little sense, as did the monsters, so you had no idea where the next threat would be.

Can't wait for the PSVR implementation.

Curious to see if it turns into another LittleBigPlanet, or a bit of a cesspool like roblox.

I actually know Labview, so if it is similar enough to it for that to transfer, it might be worth looking into provided it moves outside of the PlayStation verse.

First I'm hearing of this game and it seems super cool. I love games that really empower players to share their creativity.
