Google Stadia has been a blast to use. I mostly play on my PC, but I can pick up a controller and play on my TV, or plug it into my phone and play on my Pixel 4 XL. Since the launch of the free tier and free pro trial, matchmaking has been a lot faster and multiplayer games have been more fun.

That sucks that it doesn't work on your phone. I don't know that Google has said exactly why only certain devices are supported but I'm sure there's a good reason for it. You can play on a laptop...

You can play on a laptop or desktop, or a Chromecast Ultra plugged into your TV.

I tried Thumper on my Laptop with Stadia. It's neat, but trying to play it over Stadia is a pain in the rear, at least in a room above my router. Maybe it would be better wired or same room, but it's on Steam for $20, and works on my phone for $5, so point native builds, at least for rhythm games.

Your phone can probably run Stadia just fine, but YouTube isn't a benchmark for it. One can buffer, the other is realtime encoding.

A peak of 36K players on Stadia still seems pretty weak. I wouldn't be surprised if Stadia is canned be the end of 2021.

So what you're saying is that with the opening of the free tier Stadia already has 50% of Steam's Destiny 2 player base, despite being a new competitor? That's not weak, that's groundbreaking.

No, based on these figures, Stadia has much less than 50% of Steam's Destiny 2 population. I'd guess less than 5%.

The graphs in the linked article show aggregate number of users per day on Stadia, while the Steam Charts show simultaneous online players. Very different measurements.

Back-of-envelope estimate: take the average simultaneous Destiny 2 players on Steam at any moment, say the lowest month, February 2020, of 63,000 players simultaneous on average. Say the average player plays for an hour average. So total players in a day is about 63,000 x 24, but conservatively let's say 63,000 x 10 and round down to 500,000. If Stadia's daily aggregate was 36,000 then that's 7% of our already-conservative estimate of Steam players. I would venture a guess far below 5%.

Stadia isn't going anywhere. Steam has been around for ~17 years. Stadia was launched 4 months ago. Give it a chance.

I get that a fast paced twichy shooter like Doom is not the best use case for Stadia, and there are games that are perfectly playable on it. But if the service can't adequately play all my games, then I still need to keep dedicated hardware around to play some of them. If I'm doing that, then why do I need Stadia?

But basically someone either has a perfect experience with Doom and Stadia or someone just finds it too laggy.

It's currently free, I've tried it too 'cause I got a Buddy Pass and it's such a nice plug 'n play experience I don't think there is anything else that comes close. But it currently does not beat my "offline" games (Steam still requires an login every X months iirc). This is why I think people should atleast try it out and I'm hoping the Stadia team keeps investing in their services.

Some people just don't notice input lag that much. I've known people to play games with their TV still in that 120hz interpolation mode that adds a solid 150-200ms of lag and not notice a difference when I turn it off for them. Meanwhile, I can't even tolerate first person shooters with a mouse if v-sync is turned on. So I'm always skeptical when people report that it was "just fine". This is why I appreciated DF going through the effort of actually recording the delay between button press and game reaction on various different platforms.

I belong to the other spectrum. I've been playing FFXV on Stadia and Dota2 & Apex Legends on Geforce Now/Shadow. With these games I've had a near flawless experience, as far as I can tell. Whatever you need to detect input lag like you do, I don't have it.
Before the lockdown Stadia was especially nice because I used to travel a lot between 2 places and needed zero setup. Also playing FFXV on an old thinkpad is kind of a thrill.
With the advent of the new consoles, more powerful hardware and cloud gaming we might be able to get both for those who prefer one over the other.

That's huge. I had no idea Stadia's numbers were so high already. That's very impressive for a brand new platform.

This is peak loss leader action. Without a giant like Google backing this project something like this would never take off on a large scale for at least 15 years.
