I'm more confused what theater this scene is taking place in where all that stuff is going off. It looks like a V-1 rocket lands in the middle of them at one point.

Lmao yeah the rocket really got me. I was like “ok this is kind of cinematic, whatever BF has never had a good campaign...” Then a V1 just sort of came out of nowhere and landed on them with the accuracy of a JDAM and I let out an audible groan. They need to fire whoever it was in the marketing department that thought this was a good direction for the release trailer.

As far as I know some hid their gender and did their role.

But transgender + women + handicapped? A bit too much stretch here. Physically disabled people weren't recruited as far as I've learned from history class.

Apart from trying to rewrite history with elements from our modernized ideology it won't really change what happened in the past and thus ruins the realism of the game. So I understand the #notmybattlefield stuff in the comments there.

    Also found this:
    "Kitchen DLC for women."
    Hue.
    Sorry for bringing trash here.

No clue of the in-game context, but both women and disabled people were recruited for spy roles. SOE agents were trained in weapons and explosives. One of note is Virginia Hall, who was an amputee.

But a handicap in the front lines in a full out World War? No. Why would they do that? They didn't even recruit the ones that weren't fit. Then how does a handicap get in? World Wars were no fun and games or a place to prove a point. Patriots lost their lives. Represent them. Woman Man Transgender whoever. But add a woman plus make her handicap? They pushed it too far. Using the WWII tag just to sell their game to make it 'look cool' it's no longer WWII tbh. Call of Duty could have gone away with that but not whilst using the WWII tags.. is an insult.

I was speaking more to your point that no disabled person was ever recruited for things that sent them into the field. It doesn't look like it from the trailer based on her uniform, but I thought it was a cool possibility that she's an SOE agent who ended up in a firefight (which is plausible based on their training and their jobs as saboteurs, guerrilla fighters, and leaders of the local resistances).

I just... I guess I don't understand why this one thing is an insult and unrealistic, while the rest of it isn't? You say that the World Wars were no fun and games... but Battlefield literally is a game. It has respawns, which could be taken as an insult to all the people who died and obviously couldn't come back. It has a relatively quick first aid mechanic, which ignores the long recovery times and often permanent disability faced by people injured in battle. I'm guessing that you can't get captured and stuck in a POW camp for the rest of the war, either. (Although maybe there are storylines that include that, I don't know.)

All of these mechanics exist in the game to make it more enjoyable to play at the expense of realism. Being able to make a character that looks like you (or a badass version of who you'd like to be) is no different to me.

(PS I'm not saying you meant it in a bad way, but "a handicap" is... not a great way to refer to someone. "Disabled person" works~)

But why it's insulting is because of the things that are now happening. The spotlight is on the handicapped girl/transgender if you haven't already noticed from the Youtube comment section and twitter #notmybattlefield flood. If it were normal and a well built game - instead of wasting time on this 'alternative' story - enhancing gamers experience using the modern day technology that we have to make it close to the true world war we know as a fact, we would be blown. It should just be a typical WWII game - which is how the game devs promote it. What they did made it more Call of Duty-ish with a extra boost of sales cause of the WWII tags. They are using the dead bodies of patriots to earn money. This has derailed it from it's track. If it were normal say with a spy mission and stuff I'd be cool with it. If they had taking the effort to make a game with solid gameplay instead of doing what they have done we would appreciate these historic events more like Battlefield 1. But..... rip.

It's still hard for me to understand why people are latching onto this one thing rather than other unrealistic things. What do we know about her? Is she a main character in a storyline? Just an example of the character creation options for players? (I keep seeing people say she's trans or a lesbian, but I haven't found any info about her, so I can't tell if this is accurate or people labeling her with more identities they think are "SJW.")

My instinct is that mechanics like respawns are accepted despite being unrealistic because they are already common in this genre of game; perhaps one day "make a character that looks like you would if you'd fought in WWII" will also be common enough that it won't cause an uproar, and people can play a more realistic game if they want.

Basically, I can understand being annoyed that a game isn't what developers claim it is, but I don't consider adding female character options to be to "rewriting history" more than other aspects of the game.

Nah respawns are acceptable cause otherwise people would never reach the end game. People nowadays say Cuphead and Dark Souls as hard when the classics I grew up playing had nothing more than 3 lives and no checkpoints or saves. Those games had them both so idk why didn't they just play the game instead of make it a big deal when it was trending. (Both are fun imo btw.) Also note Respawns are game mechanic and does not alter the story. You just born again from last checpoint/save and resume the game. What they did is change the story (which is not a story but a real life event!) and that 'triggers' me and most. One guy I read somewhere said it nicely...

"Putting "fun over authentic" is probably not a great way to approach a game based around a real war in which millions of people died."

                :/

I wish you understood what I meant. Battlefield 5 is no longer based on WWII for me. That company just used a real life event to sell millions of copies of a game. Money > Respect for people that lost their lives.

Well, if we're going for realism, not everyone reached the end of the war, so I think a game with some sort of permadeath would be a valid design choice (but not a fun one).

I think we'll have to "agree to disagree" at this point. I can see your point about respect, but I don't think adding female character takes away from respecting the sacrifices of male soldiers (especially if the game covers female resistance fighters, who did exist). And all WWII games are out to make money, whatever their level of realism.

(I just thought of another reason playable female characters could be positive: increased immersion for some players. If the object is to portray a war through an interactive medium so that people can truly appreciate the hardships of war, maybe being able to further identify with your avatar helps with that?)

Dice is stuffing the game with political/social agendas for some time now and with each sequel it's even more visible.

Not only that but they are also making the game more of a "casual" type with each edition.

BF4 was the last true Battlefield for me.

The issue is that they game is starting to look like Unreal Tournament. There's nothing wrong with those kind of games, but BF was always 'sim adjacent' vs being an arcade shooter you know? If I wanted Call of Duty I'd play that. Here's hoping that these elements can be toned down a bit.

I will say, the game effects look really nice. The blood/mud sticking on the guns, the dirt sticking on the camera, that was pretty cool looking.

You ought to try Squad. It’s like someone did a mashup of BF and Arma. It’s really fun and the communication between teammates is refreshing.

Found some deets from other sites:

    • No Season Pass
    • Launch locations are France, Africa and Rottedam and North Africa desert
    • Coop Mode called Combined Arms
    • Single player War Stories return
    • Fortifications are things like sand ags, trenches, tank stoppers. Only supports can build offensively defense - fortifications such as machine guns, field cannons and are much faster at building everything.
    • Predetermined areas to build such as at flags, can rebuild destroyed buildings
    • Health bar is in stages, only regen up to closet stage not to 100 anymore
    • Physical interactions - every action in the game requires a player interact for things like medkits, spotting, ammo, ledge grabbing (example: healing requires walking over to a health pack, character animation to pick it up, then start healing)
    • No more HUD/map spotting, spotting is based on movement/changes around you
    • Much less ammo on spawn, out of ammo after a few fights, but more ways to resupply ammo in the battlefield from packs, crates, or grabbing small amounts of ammo off of bodies (all requires physical interactions)
    • Revive system has a full on animation, takes a few seconds to complete, no more revive trains, takes time to complete
    • Ragdolls are server side, can now drag a downed player's body elsewhere
    • Any class can do a squad revive, takes longer than a medic revive, does not give full health points
    • Can call for help when down such as in the trailer
    • Ragdolls (player bodies) effect the environment, push down grass etc.
    • Gunplay completely changed
    • No more visual recoil
    • Each gun has a unique recoil pattern that can be learned and mastered
    • Bipods easier to use and setup
    • Bullet penetration through thin wood, sheet metal, walls
    • Movement change, can now dive froward, backward, left and right similar to R6 Siege prone system
    • Diving has a delay to prevent dolphin diving
    • Crouch sprinting is in the game
    • Can burst out of widows and commando roll, no destroying windows first
    • Can catch, throwback or shoot grenades
    • Less grenades because less ammo
    • Can tow items in the game with vehicles such as previously stationary anti-air guns, teammate can use an anti-air gun while you tow it with a vehicle
    • For example, can drive a tiger tank towing a field cannon behind it or a truck towing ammo crate to resupply teammates on the front line
    • Destruction explodes inwards or outwards based on where the destruction happens. Throw a grenade inside of the building? The explosion sends things outside of it. Outside of it? Breaks inwards.
    • Tank driving into a building slowly destroys a building, walls slowly crack/fall, not instant
    • Heavily focused on squad play, instant placed in squad when joining a game
    • New squad spawning system, squad deploy system that shows what squad mates are doing in third person in real time before the tactical map screen, so spawning on squad is kicker than spawning on tactical map screen
    • Since squad spawning/deploying is faster than tactical map, squad wipes are serious
    • Squads accumulate points that can be spent on "squad call-ins", only squad leader can spend them in
    • Squad Call-ins are V1 or JB2 rockets as seen in the trailer, supply drops with ammo/health, a smoke barrage, heavy weapon pickups (not hero kits), squad only vehicles such as Churchill crocodile flamethrower tank or the Sturm tiger
    • Elite classes are gone
    • Behemoths are gone
    • Large, non-fatal explosions can knock a player over
    • Four classes are back: assault, medic, scout, support
    • Create a solider, add them to a company of soldiers, then can customize things like gender, face look, face paint, outfit, accessories, etc. and assign them a class archtype
    • Class archetypes highly customization
    • Can be an assault that specializes in anti-tank or anti-infantry only, or a mix of both, etc.
    • Highly specialized archetypes called exotics such as a recon paratrooper, stealthy short-range behind enemy lines person who uses a suppressed SMG and silent gadgets like pistols and garrotes comes with silent footsteps and throwing knives
    • Can change and add specialization trees such as agility, flak armor, suppressive resistance
    • The more you play a class more you get more specializations/archetypes within said class
    • Same system for guns, pick a gun, level it up, unlock specializations and making gameplay choices in a skill tree on that gun
    • Specializations are the only thing that affects how a gun plays or feels (ex: bipod)
    • Five-seven elements to change on a gun to make it your own (stocks, sights, muzzles, chassis, skins, leaves on the front, cloth on back, straps, etc).
    • Gameplay and visual customization is SEPARATE. Look of weapon is just visual without impacting gameplay, specialization is what determines how the gun plays/feels.
    • Same system for vehicles and planes
    • Asymmetric vehicles for teams, (ex: one team might get a big slow tank that does lot of damage, other team gets a small fast tank that does light damage)
    • Grand Operations gamemode, each day is a full match, always advance to the next day
    • GOs have different objectives per day
    • Success or failure in GO days have visual and gameplay impact
    • Day 4 only has a chance to happen if there isn't a clear winner from previous days
    • Day 4 is last stand, limited ammo, no respawns, whoever lives to the end wins
    • Coop mode, combined arms with a dynamic mission creator/AI that sits between SP/MP as a creative sandbox
    • Soldiers created for a company can be used in both coop and MP, parity
    • No news on suppression yet, uncertain if in game
    • All logic in game is server side, not client side so changes to systems do not require a patch
    • Promises of more communication between devs and community, roadmaps, etc.
    • New content is called Tides of war, daily/weekly/monthly challenges with overarching chapters and questlines that give you "unique items and cosmetics"
    • Tides of War gives new maps, game modes, limited time experiences
    • Variety of maps with different tones such as complete crushing battlefield chaos or more slow space large maps with tempo that goes up and down
    • Gamemodes confirmed: Grand Operations, Conquest, TDM, Domination
    • No news on RSP
    • The Shhhh animation from the trailer is possible to experience in game
    • Transport vehicles are alive on the map and can jump into them
    • Combat vehicles spawn from tactical deployment map
    • Biggest changes summed up: lack of auto regen health, limited ammo, building fortifications, phyiscal interactions for everything, skill-based gunplay, squad revives, massive emphasis on squad play and team play, 3d spotting changes, minimal HUD

I can't get excited about Battlefield games anymore. Everything since Bad Company 2 has been a huge disappointment. Battlefield 2 was the last great BF game with awesome and unique maps, and a big focus on squad cohesion with command mode. Battlefield 3 felt small in comparison and I couldn't even muster up the desire to try BF4. Everything from EA is legitimately disappointing now. It's not like I can even justify the price by saying that the game will be fun enough to put up with EA crap.
