The article itself is "confirming my membership" and won't load, but I am very, very excited to see things like this bubble up. The entire structure of those platforms is built for repetitive patterns, so I'd argue, you'd need separate skins for websites and apps that attract younger people, anyways.

The states said Meta’s algorithms were designed to push children and teenagers into rabbit holes of toxic and harmful content.

We are far too disconnected with the media we consume. At least back in the day, when you were on a sleazey website, you were aware. Now everything's very homogeneous, which can be tricky to spot bias, among, obviously, everything else that's even led to a young teenager's death.

The states said Meta’s algorithms were designed to push children and teenagers into rabbit holes of toxic and harmful content. Features like “infinite scroll” and persistent alerts were used to hook young users, the states said. The attorneys general also charged the company with violating federal privacy laws for children.

”Meta has harnessed powerful and unprecedented technologies to entice, engage, and ultimately ensnare youth and teens,” the states said in their lawsuit. “Its motive is profit.”

Interesting that they're targeting features like infinite scrolling and persistent alerts. Meta is (obviously) not the only company to take advantage of these features and the addictive nature of social media the Internet, but I wouldn't mind seeing even the slightest push for regulation.

I would also love to see regulation in the tik-tok-ification of all of these platforms. Reels, Shorts, and all other ultra-shortform content should be disincentivized. I really like Swell Entertainment's phrasing of what it's been doing to her brain as "manufactured ADHD." As someone with ADHD, these ultra-shortform videos make my ADHD worse after I've watched a few videos, even if I'm doing it for research. There is no reason that every platform should be trying to attract creators that only make 30 second or less content.

i can only imagine what it's doing to kids' developing brains.

unfortunately it looks like the archived link still gets cut off about halfway with a "Confirming article access" :(

definitely don't copy/paste the article, according to the Tildes docs it can get the whole site in trouble. I will check reading mode though, thank you!
