What a milestone! I've been working on this skirt for months and it’s done [insert yellow clapping hands (which aren't available on desktop apparently) here] ...but I don’t think I’ll be wearing it ☹️ It came out too tight around the waist, oddly puffy around the hips and behind, and I think it should have been shorter. But I did it! My first garment (not counting face masks). I made it all by myself, I learned a lot, had fun, and I’m counting it as a win 🏆

I dunno, I think you made a master piece! It may not be ultra form fitting and hug every single curve of your body, but it does have pockets, is an absolutely rocking custom piece, AND YOU MADE IT!!! This is really awesome! This is a huge win Do you do tailoring, or is this your first time entirely? You could maybe take it to an alterations shop and ask them to tailor it to you, and watch what they do. I am 100% certain your are very aware of all the cuts, stitches, and flow of each piece of cloth because YOU MADE IT and are more awesome for it. Due to this awareness you should easily be able to tell what they did and learn from that to make your next awesome piece of clothing even more awesome! Seriously- this is really cool. I know for damn sure I would compliment you if I saw you wearing it!

Apart from a duffel bag I made in class when I was 13, and many, many face masks over the last year, this is my first big sewing project and certainly my first garment. I was really hoping it would work out, but strangely, before I attached the waistband (the last step, and one I had mostly skipped in practice skirts), I kind of made peace with the idea that it might not work out.
I could remake the waistband so it’s less tight, and making the skirt body shorter would be easy. I’m not sure what to do about the darts not really fitting it to me the way I want—this is something where your suggestion that I meet with a tailor is a great idea. Unfortunately, after today, I’m packing up my sewing stuff for a while because I’m moving! When I get settled again, I’d love to try again, because I’d really like to have this skirt in my wardrobe!

Doesn't look too bad, but yeah it seems making well fitting clothes is much harder than it looks at first.

I had no idea it would be so hard! I thought for sure if I was using my own body measurements, the hardest part would be, well, everything else!

Even if it doesn't fit how you thought, it looks very well constructed! The seams are very nice and neat, I think you did a great job!

Thanks, @eve, it’s very pleasing to have this specific detail noted as having been done well 💚

I love that color! The fact that you made this to be form fitting and still have pockets is quite an accomplishment.

I think pretty much every garment should have pockets! In fact, something I wanted to do with these, but skipped in favor of getting it done, was add a little divider in the bottom of one of the pockets. Some of my husband’s pants have this. I don’t know what it’s for, but I think of it as a “fiddle pocket,” because it’s just the thing for people who need something to do with their fingers 😂

It's called a watch pocket. It exists as a place to put a pocketwatch. Now it's only there for tradition's sake.

Perfectly fits a Zippo or chewing gum or a small knife like a leatherman micra which is useful.

Down in the bottom of the pocket? I’m so happy to know that!

Reading the other comments it seems "It has pockets" should be a brand for skirts and dresses 😄 Congrats on finishing it and it does look lovely!

This is amazing! I think you're too critical on it, I love the form. AND IT HAS POCKETS!

This is an absolute delight. Fantastic work! I think the color is stunning, and the design is so simple and clean. What type of fabric did you use?

Thank you so much! It’s Kona Cotton Sour Apple. I looked it up just now to learn what Kona Cotton is/means and I guess it's a fabric for quilting 🤷‍♀️ from (maybe he’s a big deal?) Robert Kaufman....
