This massacre is the modern shining emblem of what's wrong with authoritarian communism. So many tankies paper over the idea of self determination and individual free will as "borgoise manipulation", and the entire idea of communism gets twisted to vilify anything that doesn't benefit them, and people like them.

If your ideology requires people to be forcefully educated at the barrel of a gun to support it, then it's a shitty ideology. Go back to the drawing board and come up with something that doesn't necessitate the slaughter of innocent people who want the ability to live a free life.

The defense of the CCP and maoism online by Americans and citizens of western democracies in general lately is just really disgusting, and belies a real ignorance of what it takes to enforce a society where everyone just magically happens to vote for the same guy every year, and there's only one legal political party. Part of that is genuine historical ignorance, and part of that is due to overt propaganda and manipulation of both US based and Chinese based media outlets by the CCP.

Modern China is a violent, authoritarian dictatorship, it's been a violent, authoritarian dictatorship from its inception, and even though the US is also facing problems around authoritarianism and unchecked capitalist consolidation, that doesn't change that fact.

FTFY. Seriously. US is not that far away from this. Neither is Europe with rising reactionary tide. In these pictures, I can easily see myself within 1-2 years if things go wrong enough in Europe.

I'm always happy to see the Goddess of Democracy statue, whether the original or the now dismantled reproduction. What a tragedy. The lives of a billion plus people, and those of the whole world, might have been very different today if their government chose a different way to respond to the sincere cries of its youth. My whole life would have taken a very different trajectory were it not for that fateful day.

Authoritarianism is on the rise. It doesn't matter whether it calls itself democracy or communism, it's simply when those with guns and soldiers decide protesters who want to live with basic rights must go.

Moment of silence for the protestors, as well as the living parents of those who have lost youths they cannot openly mourn.

It was actually erected by the Chinese Students' Society, which might also shock Chinese students if they happen to read the plaque.

There will be a bin where you can deposit your WeChat listening device in another room off site, of course.

Shit, I didn't realize what I was looking at on my phone. It is quite clear on my computer. Sorry about that. I thought they were just wounded.

No worries. I've seen far far far worse on the internet. But for other people who aren't quite as desensitized as I am, I figured a warning couldn't hurt.

I’m not clicking the link because I’ve seen these before and they’re no joke. But I’d encourage any adult with a strong stomach, who is unfamiliar with what happened that day, to educate themselves.

Prior to that I had seen the famous Tank Man picture and even some video of him in the moments before and after it was taken, but I had no idea of the extent of violent inhumanity that unfolded that day. This is the sort of thing that no one should have to see, yet everyone must so that we can understand what evil is possible in this world and avoid letting it repeat in the future.

But yes if anyone wants to read the text version without photos I totally respect that and would be glad to copy paste.

    Gore report

This post contains 45 photos of the Tiananmen Square protests. Of those, 6 can be categorized as gore. So 13.33% of the photos are gore.

Here are the descriptions the website provides for each of those 6 photos that I classified as "gore":

    descriptions of gore inside
    • "A rickshaw driver fiercely pedals wounded people to a nearby hospital, with the help of bystanders, on June 4, 1989. PLA soldiers again fired hundreds of rounds towards angry crowds gathered outside Tiananmen Square at noon."
    • "Taken care by others, an unidentified foreign journalist (2nd from right) is carried away from the clash between the army and students near Tiananmen Square, on June 4, 1989."
    • "The driver of an armored personnel carrier that rammed through student lines, injuring many, lies dead after being beaten by students who set his vehicle on fire during an army attack on Tiananmen Square, on June 4, 1989."
    • "A girl wounded during the clash between the army and students near Tiananmen Square is carried out by a cart, on June 4, 1989."
    • "Bodies of dead civilians lie among crushed bicycles near Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, on June 4, 1989."
    • "People on Chang’an Boulevard in Beijing hold up a photo that they described as dead victims of the violence against pro-democracy protesters on Tiananmen Square, on June 5, 1989."

For good measure, here are some descriptions of photos that are not gore. Spoiler markup is not required, I'm just OCD:

    • "Unidentified Beijing youths chant as they drive to Tiananmen Square to lend their enthusiastic support to striking university students, on May 19, 1989."
    • "An unidentified mother introduces her son to a soldier on an army truck, 8 kilometers west of Tiananmen Square, in Beijing, on May 20, 1989. Citizens had surrounded and stopped the force."
    • "Beijing University students listen as a strike spokesman details plans for a rally in Tiananmen Square, which they have occupied for the last two weeks, on May 28, 1989."
    • "A Chinese couple on a bicycle take cover beneath an underpass as tanks deploy overhead in eastern Beijing, on June 5, 1989."
    • "A dissident student asks soldiers to go back home as crowds flooded into central Beijing, on June 3, 1989."
    • "Pro-democracy protesters link arms to hold back angry crowds, preventing them from chasing a retreating group of soldiers near the Great Hall of the People, on June 3, 1989 in Beijing. Protesters were angered by an earlier attack upon students and citizens using tear gas and truncheons. People in the background stand atop buses used as a roadblock."
