Poshmark (online used goods store) - Good, bad, invite code?

Rather temped to buy a used item from the site, and wondering if fellow members have used it before.

Instead of search a random referral invite code, anyone want to share theirs? thanks :)

Seconded (or fifthed as the case may be now). I've bought a number of things from Poshmark over the years and never had any major issues. I actually recently bought a limited edition lithograph from Poshmark for my mother, to match the other ones she had from the same artist. She was incredibly happy with it, and so even got it framed to match the others as well.

I imagine Poshmark is a lot like eBay and any other secondhand market though in that YMMV and will very much depend on the seller's reputation. So do your research on the seller before you buy something from them, and ask for more info or pics of the item if you need them, especially for something expensive (like a limited edition lithograph). ;)

Artwork, figurines, electronics, videogames, furniture/decor, etc. Their website/app makes it pretty difficult to browse for anything other than clothing though, TBH. :/

Just be sure to be mindful of your expectations, as you are buying from a regular human and not going to be offered the same luxuries corporations have gotten us used to in modern times. Expect reused mail packaging, slow shipping times, likely no returns, and heck your clothes may even have cat hair on them.

Despite all that, it is SUCH a fun way to shop.
It’s better for the environment, you can get amazing deals on cool rare finds, and you can list your own old clothes and become part of the ecosystem yourself. I personally have been able to massively increase my wardrobe budget because I alllmooost break even reselling my clothes once I get bored of them.

Good notes on expectations, and yeah this is probably better than buying everything brand new. That's so cool you manage to resell things as well! thank you :)

My wife and I both enjoy it, but it’s always a coin flip on whether you’ll have to do what we refer to as “Paying the Poshmark Tax,” aka washing the musty basement smell out of whatever clothing you buy. We tend to notice it more with women’s and children’s clothing since I think there are more proper “sellers” of those items trying to store and move a lot of product in that space. I’ve bought a couple of men’s hoodies and one pair of shoes, and they may have well come straight from a store - they were mint condition.

I'm about to lead you down a rabbithole of efficient secondhand clothing shopping - the Gem search app. It's what the enshittified marketplace is terrified of - a third party whose search works for the consumer (at least for now).

Gem searches across multiple marketplaces - Poshmark, Grailed, eBay, etc. You can filter clothing by size, price, location, and other characteristics. Privacy policies are not worse than those for the marketplaces themselves, you can adjust how much or little notification e-mail you receive. If I can't find what I need from local secondhand, I can always find something through Gem.

Caveat emptor applies - Poshmark is a relatively consumer-friendly marketplace, as noted above, but always look at the individual seller's reputation and quality of their posting.

This tool is interesting….not sure I’m too pleased with it.

I have a specific brand that I track across all the second hand apps and I am quite familiar with the inventory that each site has and am aware of the current the going value for many pieces (I check maybe every ~2 weeks or so, have done it for years to find rare pieces).

My first impression is… hmmm. It seems that I am only finding common items that are….incredibly overpriced for what they actually sell for?

I changed my setting to display the results in the order they were listed and ….same thing. Only 370 results when there should be a few thousand at least.

I also realized none of my own listed items made the results either. Huh.

Then I see this in the upper corner “Gem may earn commission from links.” Ahhhh ok, that makes more sense. This tool isn’t what enshittified websites are afraid of, it’s taken the enshittified aspects each site has and condensed it further.

YMMV, I'm not doing brand-specific searches for the most part, but rather materials, styles, and sizes. Could be a keyword indexing issue?

          epilogue:

Finally signed up and had some time to pull the trigger. ....the cute bag is now marked sold. I didn't think there was any sort of urgency to this sort of thing, as the item was listed in February. My disappointment is unparalleled, and I fear this might grow into a FOMO trauma response.

Thanks for the GEM link! Now to resist buying a random bag because of the disappointment.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the thing! But I've found that if I miss getting exactly what I wanted, a better one comes around again.

I use it when I need to - usually to find a discontinued clothing item I like to wear to replace. I haven't ever had any issues. Just remember to accept the packages.
