This kinda lands at the right time for me, as I'm coming out of my long storied call center job for one that's assembling and flashing computers and medical equipment. I have a solid pay bump, and while I can no longer work from home, I'm not tied to a desk, grinding my soul up to grease the wheel of this nightmare machine we call "customer service," cramping my body into ideal computing conditions for ten hours a day, and they seem to be very thorough in their safety procedures from what I've seen so far. I'd rather be sitting at home, being restful, perhaps taking some self directed study or finding a creative outlet, but this could be fun too.

EDIT: this may be a better fit for ~humanities, as some of Olly's other videos are there, but work is more of a ~life thing.

One of his best videos imo. Really resonated with me, as I just got out of my first soul-sucking office job to go back to school. I now understand personally how soul-sucking work can be.

Bartending/waiting/bussing. Our owners were less exploitive, but would still hire immigrants and pay them sub-minimum wage and stiff people on hours. Many of these owners were proud "self-made small business owners," which does explain my vitrole against them.

Speaking of other scummy small business owners, retailers were just as bad, if not worse. Sexual harassment, racism, violation of labor laws, nepotism, and arbitrary and inconsistent hours were the norm. Easier to get away with these things when you don't have an HR department or have exemptions to "promote" small business.

Soul-sucking office jobs. Even my current (and best) job to date is still like 80 percent arbitrary bullshit. In various positions, doing same work, I'd been able to do almost nothing of value for 6 months or more. Luckily I was in front of a computer and could self-learn, but it's still depressing.

Working in big retail is even more soul sucking. Not being able to sit for 6+ hours with only 15 minute break (if you're lucky... my state only mandated that break for minors). In this modern age we could shutdown 90% of retail and replace it with a fraction of workers doing warehouse/shipping jobs instead. And I'll bet most workers would be happier. I know I enjoyed being a warehouse worker far more than cashiering.
