Year in Review: Movies of 2022
What were your highlights for the year? What were the best things you watched? What surprised you? What let you down?
Reflect back on the year and talk about anything and everything related to the movies you watched in 2022. You do NOT have to limit it to 2022 releases -- anything you watched this year counts.
I’ve been waiting for this.
I won’t put movies that came out this year, because I feel like that’s a separate thing and I have yet to watch movies that I think are going to end up on my top 10 list (Avatar, Babylon, The Menu).
Here’s a quick top 10 of what I’ve seen this year.
There’s some bonafide classics on there like Barry Lyndon (considered one of the best movies of all time). And also some, at least what some people would describe as, guilty pleasures like Down With Love (one of the best romcoms I’ve ever seen) and Meet Joe Black (which is a tender drama).
I think most of these movies are pretty easy watches with the exception of Lyndon and Requiem.
Requiem for a dream, one of those excellent movies that I never want to see ever again ever.
The most realistic emotional depiction of addiction I know about.
This isn’t so much a response to this particular comment but moreso all of the movie content you post here: I find your passion for movies inspiring! It’s clear from your posts that you love them deeply, and thank you for sharing your love with us here.
Thank you so much. You’re always so kind to me. I can see why you’re a teacher.
Triangle of Sadness became an unexpected highlight for me, it's maybe my favorite movie in years. I previously saw another Ruben Östlund movie, The Square, which I rather liked but Triangle is in a different league. When the shit, almost literally, starts hitting the fan I just lost it, it's hilarious, outrageous, full of unexpected twists and escalations. If you're in the mood for an artsy, dark, European comedy this hits the spot.
I also finally got to see Whiplash, which I had on my list for ages and wow, another absolute thrill ride despite never leaving it's niche-y setting in an elite New York music school. I felt absolutely drained after it but in a good way, like an emotional workout.
I saw a few new releases more than once in theaters this year.
Each was excellent. Top Gun in particular needs to be called out. It had every reason to be a mediocre cash grab but ended up being far better than the original.
I'm so mad that Maverick was so good, because I really don't like Cruise as a human. But he can act, so there's that. Rumor has it though he's considering choosing his daughter in favor of Scientology, so there's also that.
That rumor circled around almost a decade ago. It didn’t end up happening.
But he sure can act.
I totally agree re: Top Gun. Tom Cruise recently has been putting so much effort into high quality, big-screen spectacle despite audiences' shift towards at-home viewing. I'm really excited for the next Mission: Impossible movie.
2022 releases:
Non-2022:
Only including new-to-me watches, otherwise the re-watches of my favorites would dominate the list.
I didn't get to see a ton of new releases this year, but I usually hit those in the following year's January before the Oscars. Here are a few favorites I first saw this year:
