    I’ve been waiting for this.

I won’t put movies that came out this year, because I feel like that’s a separate thing and I have yet to watch movies that I think are going to end up on my top 10 list (Avatar, Babylon, The Menu).

Here’s a quick top 10 of what I’ve seen this year.

    1. Barry Lyndon
    2. What’s Up Doc?
    3. The Young Girls of Rochefort
    4. Heaven Can Wait
    5. Down With Love
    6. Notes on a Scandal
    7. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
    8. Sullivan’s Travels
    9. Requiem for a Dream
    10. Meet Joe Black

There’s some bonafide classics on there like Barry Lyndon (considered one of the best movies of all time). And also some, at least what some people would describe as, guilty pleasures like Down With Love (one of the best romcoms I’ve ever seen) and Meet Joe Black (which is a tender drama).

I think most of these movies are pretty easy watches with the exception of Lyndon and Requiem.

Requiem for a dream, one of those excellent movies that I never want to see ever again ever. The most realistic emotional depiction of addiction I know about.

Thank you so much. You’re always so kind to me. I can see why you’re a teacher.

Triangle of Sadness became an unexpected highlight for me, it's maybe my favorite movie in years. I previously saw another Ruben Östlund movie, The Square, which I rather liked but Triangle is in a different league. When the shit, almost literally, starts hitting the fan I just lost it, it's hilarious, outrageous, full of unexpected twists and escalations. If you're in the mood for an artsy, dark, European comedy this hits the spot.

I also finally got to see Whiplash, which I had on my list for ages and wow, another absolute thrill ride despite never leaving it's niche-y setting in an elite New York music school. I felt absolutely drained after it but in a good way, like an emotional workout.

I saw a few new releases more than once in theaters this year.

    • Everything Everywhere All at Once
    • Top Gun: Maverick
    • NOPE

Each was excellent. Top Gun in particular needs to be called out. It had every reason to be a mediocre cash grab but ended up being far better than the original.

That rumor circled around almost a decade ago. It didn’t end up happening. But he sure can act.

    2022 releases:

    • Tár - Astonishingly good performance from Cate Blanchett.
    • The Banshees of Inisherin - Must watch for anyone who likes Martin McDonagh's films. Gorgeous cinematography and stellar acting which leaves a strong imprint.
    • Moonage Daydream - Fitting homage to David Bowie. A visual feast.
    • Triangle of Sadness - Ruben Östlund is a brilliant satirist!

    Non-2022:

    • 2046 - A beautiful meditation on unrequited love.
    • Drive My Car - Very clever film which didn't feel like 3 hours.
    • Summer of Soul - Captures some stunning performances.
    • The Worst Person in the World - A good life study that explores some of the intricate dance of a young woman in their 20s finding attachment and a sense of self.
    • Princess Mononoke - Have mean meaning to watch this forever and got to see it on the big screen - was brilliant of course.

I didn't get to see a ton of new releases this year, but I usually hit those in the following year's January before the Oscars. Here are a few favorites I first saw this year:

    • Prince of Darkness (Carpenter, 1987) -- Caught this on Criterion Channel during October. Kind of a perfect horror film.
    • Braindead (Jackson, 1992) -- Hilarious and super gory, and totally unlike LoTR!
    • Bringing Out the Dead (Scorsese, 1999) -- Cage + Schrader + Scorsese, it's like this was made in a lab just for me.
    • Ambulance (Bay, 2022) -- Somehow a Michael Bay movie is my favorite of 2022? Wild.
    • Drive My Car (Hamaguchi, 2021) -- This got me reading some of Murakami's writing and it's fantastic, especially the short story collection from which this story was adapted.
