It was pandering to my demographic (40's, Mario fan, gamer) and it worked to reference every Mario IP of any significance, but I found it considerably more well written than many movies made to tug on the nostalgia-strings. Shoehorning in "Take on Me" was almost a jumping-the-shark moment of pandering. But I agree it's enjoyable.
It’s fine. The plot is extremely basic and predicatable. It’s definitely a little kids movie but it has enough jokes to keep most adults amused.
Unless you’re super into nerd culture and/or a huge Mario fan, no.
