Comic fans GOTG 3 thoughts?

Any big Comic fans here? anyone see GOTG3 yet? I'm going on the 13th, didn't have time to get to it till then.

No Spoilers, please just curious what everyone thinks.

Was wondering were you would rank it in the MCU.

My top three for Solo Films
Captain America Winter Solider
Captain America Civil War
Thor Ragnarök

Top Avengers
Infinity War and Endgame

Does GOTG3 beat Civil War or Winter Solider ? I hear its better than two but I don't think that's hard to do. GOTG 2 is the weakest of the first two for sure.

Anyway, I haven't seen the new movie, but Civil War and Winter Soldier don't even register as noteworthy to me, especially the latter. I just don't care about heroes and villains that are essentially regular people with maxed-out attributes. Give me an interesting sci-fi or fantasy twist and I'll be happy.

A good practice with context specific acronyms is to say it in full the first time and use the acronym in the subsequent mentions. I'm a Marvel fan and this is the first time I've seen it.

Very few movies have released this year worth the theatre experience. GOTG3 is one of them. You'll love it.

At this point, James Gunn is the only remaining consistent director in the entire genre of superhero movies so if there's any MCU movie I'm looking forward to, it's GotG3. Gunn's movies (and Christmas special) have been the only ones to consistently capture me as just good movies by themselves, probably helped by the fact that they're largely divorced from the rest of the MCU. Lots of one-offs (Winter Solider and Thor Ragnarok were incredible) but Gunn's the only one with consistent output to me so far.

I actually lost all interest in the MCU back when it was announced that they were going to do Civil War, one of my least favourite comic story arcs of all time, which is why it took me years to get around to watching Winter Soldier. I also fell out with any potential the DCCU had when they announced "Superman vs. Batman" and the writing was immediately on the wall that nobody involved had ever understood a Batman or Superman story in their lives.

    Just saw it yesterday.

There's nothing bad about it, but I just didn't find myself too incredibly invested in it. And it's really not the movie's fault. My husband is a fan and he watched so much content from people speculating about it and then reviews before we even got to see it and that really colored my expectations. And with the hindsight given by actually seeing the movie, I really disagree with the opinions of all of the reviewers, even if I do understand where they're coming from.

I do have two complaints about the movie, but they're pretty minor. Number one is that it just felt a bit too long. Number two is that I disliked the heavy-handed usage of cute animals; it just feels a bit too obviously emotionally manipulative.

But beyond that I think the writing and filmmaking were pretty well done overall. I particularly liked the opening sequence where the camera follows rocket strolling along while listening to music. I also think the CG - the animation particularly - was top-notch. The work done on the talking animal characters in particular showed that the animators put a lot of care into their work.

I've stopped engaging with pretty much all content about movies/shows/games before they come out. I used to do this with a bunch of different things and it just got emotionally exhausting being invested in stuff that didn't even exist yet, and trying to sustain some kind of hype for something that was months (or even years) away. Plus, very few things wouldn't be disappointing if you've invested that much in it without even knowing what the thing is. At that point you're basically inventing a movie/game to be obsessed with that only exists in the fandom.

And the weird thing is that he only likes the movies. I don't know why he doesn't read the comic books.

You could recommend getting Marvel Unlimited to him. That might encourage him to give reading the comics a try. Whenever there is a new, cheap promo, I usually sub for a few months (or a year if that's the promo length), binge a bunch of comics in that time, then cancel. It's the cheapest way to read Marvel comics without resorting to piracy.

If you live in the US or Canada and have a library card (and participating local library), hoopla (iOS, Android, Web) is a free option too. But the selection of available comics, especially from Marvel and DC, will vary greatly.

And if he wants some non-Marvel/DC comic recommendations, I would be happy to provide some. :)

I liked the first two movies quite a bit (I'd say they're my top 2 MCU films, having seen all of them up until Black Widow or thereabouts before I stopped being a completionist).

Due to extreme superhero fatigue I wasn't excited about this one, but my youngest kid was all aboard the hype train so I ended up seeing it anyway. I was pretty underwhelmed. It's not that it was bad, just wasn't outstanding enough to overcome the general sense of ennui that Disney franchises stir up in me now.

During the 2010s I couldn't have imagined anything more tedious than the zombie apocalypse craze that all the studios latched onto, turning something I once loved into something I couldn't care less about. But the vigor with which Disney is milking Marvel and Star Wars has made me realize how naive I truly was back then.
