Has anyone tried 4DX movies?

Apparently, it's like 3D D-Box but with atmospheric effects, scents and even leg ticklers.

Lightyear was cool in it. It’d make it seem like it was floating during the space scenes and the rocket flying scenes were also cool.

Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Guardians 3 were all kind of disappointing in the format.

One of my friends watched Evil Dead Rise in the format and it would shake every jump scare apparently.

For the premium price, I rather go watch something in IMAX.

I saw Venom: Let There be Carnage in 4DX and it was a fun thing to do... once hah. Luckily it was only 90 minutes because I was definitely getting a little motion sick by the end.

I agree, it's fun to try it once but not for me either.

I've only seen a few and it's been a bit mixed. My first 4DX movie was Dragonball Super: Superhero, which was amazing, the seats hardly stopped moving and during the fights the seat backs gave us a good thumping too, it was like a theme park ride and it seemed like the movie was designed for 4DX. I enjoyed the movie and experience so much that I went and saw it in 4DX again before it left theatres, it was just pure fun. After that positive experience I then saw Nope in 4DX and there was nothing. In the movie there's horse riding, a swooping UFO, panoramic camera movements, jump scares, all sorts of things that could have seat movements choreographed to. I remember one judder and some smells being pumped at us, and a couple of little water sprays. It was such a disappointment! Then, a few months ago I went and saw the Demon Slayer special, and once again it was done so well that it seemed like it was designed for the 4DX experience.

Overall I think moving forward I'll definitely see any anime in 4DX if it's available, but probably won't bother with live action unless it's got really, really good reviews. Maybe there's something about anime that makes it easier to choreograph the special effects, but that's speculation on my part.

Doing that for a feature length film, where it was an afterthought? Eh...

It was fun to try, but I don't think we'll be doing it again. We saw Fast & Furious 8 in it, and it kind of felt like trying to watch a movie while someone behind you is kicking your seat.

I agree. I was 5 minutes into the movie when I almost left because it was hard to concentrate with all the things going on.

    Yes! Many times!

The one thing about it is that the experience can change drastically, and there's not really an easy way to tell if they are going to be fun, active, or underwhelming. The only thing that there seems to be a correlation with is the style of cinematography, but you can't really know about it until you see the movie so it's not a helpful benchmark. Most of the Marvel movies I've seen in that format were pretty good, but Quantumania was double disappointing because the movie itself wasn't good.

If you are watching a movie that is exciting and you want the experience to be extra exciting, it can be worth it. It makes things feel like a rollercoaster. But it's certainly not something you want to do for every movie.

I continue to hope and pray I get to experience a 4DX version of Speed Racer.

I’ve seen two movies in 4DX (both over a decade ago so it’s probably come a long way since then and they were only the moving seats at the time) and they left two wildly different impressions:

    • The Fast and the Furious 6: It was pretty fantastic and felt like the kind of movie made for 4DX. Genuinely felt like you were in the car.

    • The Book of Eli: ….it was two hours of walking.

Edit: Just learned these were D-BOX, not 4DX. TIL they’re different and not just brand names.

We saw the Avatar movie in 4DX and it felt like a gimmick. The blast of air in your ear every time someone fired a bow and arrow was distracting and annoying. The seats moved around like a rollercoaster which was fine, I guess, but I would rather watch the movie without being flung around. The shiatsu-style massager in the chair literally felt exactly like the person behind us was kicking the back of the chair which was extremely annoying. My partner wears glasses and is on the shorter side and she found the water spraying did nothing but mist up her lenses. Overall a pretty poor experience and we won't be doing it again.

Not directly on the topic of 4DX but I did watch Top Gun: Maverick in ScreenX (extends the screen out to the sides) and if there was ever a movie that was perfectly suited for screen technology it is that one. First, the movie itself is pretty good (in my opinion). There are enough call backs for all the old farts that were/are obsessed with the original. The pacing of the plot and casting were great - Val Kilmer's cameo was perfect. So it already has all of this going for it and then you add in the additional screens for all of the action scenes. I mean, it added up to an amazing experience. If they ever show it in a theater like that near you, I would recommend you check it out. I watched it twice myself and wouldn't mind going back for a third.

I did see Maverick in D-Box (the moving seats experience). It was literally one of the funnest movie experiences in my life. The rumbling of the engines and all the movement was glorious.
