Especially a Christopher Nolan movie, I want to see it fresh, with a clear mind, with space before and afterwards to let it ripen.

going to the cinema to overpay for mediocre snacks, sticky floors, noisy/inconsiderate audiences, inability to pause, etc etc etc.... that's a chore.

Yes yes. Generic reddit comment about how terrible it is to go outside and watch a movie in a theater and how superior at home viewing is. Happens once every post.

There are really good reasons to wait for home viewing. I'm trying to be more specific and less generic, for me it isn't a snarky feeling/response, just a mildly sad one.

I still enjoy theaters, but post-covid it's been about a coin flip for each of the ~10 movies I've seen on whether or not someone is loudly talking to someone in the back or on their phone.

I've had to be the shusher like three times now and it completely ruins your mental connection for the rest of the movie.

it's not how often i experience a noisy/inconsiderate audience in a vacuum, it's how often I experience it relative to my living room. and all the other factors i mentioned

It's ironic. Some of the scuttlebutt is that Warner Brothers set the release date for Barbie as an intentional "Fuck You" to Nolan for leaving WB for Universal.

But by doing so, the meme cycle that resulted created a level of hype for both movies that probably exceeds what they would have done alone. I expect Oppenheimer probably benefited more than Barbie did, but it's very cool that these movies that aim at almost polar opposite target demos are going to get tons of crossover.

As the pandemic fades into memory it's nice to have things we can collectively do together than feel positive for a change. I don't think I've just enjoyed a memey, collective action like this since before 2016. Maybe when Pokemon Go first came out was the last time. It's just a shame I won't be able to participate since I have a small child at home and can't get extended runs of time to goof off like this, but I'm glad other people can.

Kinda reminds me of when Doom and Animal Crossing came out at the same time a few years ago. Loads of shitposting all around.

I missed that one too. Seemed like harmless fun that at least one theatre didn't find funny

I am not normally a “gotta see it on the first day” kind of person. Really, I’m not even a “gotta see it in the theaters” kind of person. So either these two flicks are something special or I’m just a chump susceptible to marketing. Probably I’m a little bit of both.

Lots of hype on these two shows. Almost smells of desperation.

I seem to have missed this meme. Tldr version?

The thing is, this entire thing became a viral meme, a lot of people who probably would have only seen one or the other end up seeing both because of how viral the meme of "Barbie + Oppenheimer" has gone.

Oh, so that's where all these barbie and oppenheimer memes are coming from that I've been seeing lately. Was wondering if there was any kind of meaning behind it all or if it was just some weird thing that sprouted up one day. Truth be told I had no idea there was even a barbie movie coming out.

Anyways, I'll probably be one of those 200 thousand people on opening day watching oppenheimer. Been anticipating this one all year since I love christopher nolan's movies. Hope this one doesn't let me down (even though I doubt it will, I'm a bit of a history buff so this is right up my alley).
