Based on a survey of 1,800 people where 11% said "I can't recall the last movie I saw in a theater". Another 11% said "Barbie was the first film I saw in a theater since the pandemic". Not quite the same as a definitive quarter of movie goers breaking their post-pandemic theater free streak.

Actually, I think it would be valid to clump those two groups together. Presumably the people that can’t recall the last movie they saw in a theater would have gone even longer than the ~3 years lapse of the pandemic group. So, in essence Barbie managed to expand the movie going market by re engaging a big chuck of the public. It’d be interesting to see how this would have compared with Titanic, Avatar and other blockbusters.
With the cost of hitting the cinema these days, I'll wait for the digital release. If I took my family I'd be looking at £50 in tickets for base level. Then probably the same, if not more, again...

If I took my family I'd be looking at £50 in tickets for base level. Then probably the same, if not more, again in drinks and snacks if I bought them in there. It's not worth £100+ to take a family of five to the cinema for 3 hours with the way the economy is right now.
3 is kind of the tolerable limit for every once in awhile. Five is like a hard nope pretty much ever. I go for well reviewed movies, especially anything that I think is visually interesting enough...

I go for well reviewed movies, especially anything that I think is visually interesting enough to see in a theater. Wish I could have seen Extraction 2 on the big screen.

I wonder if some of the Barbie movie goers are in a similar situation? Family friendly movies have broad appeal, kids will drag their parents and other adults with them.

It's interesting that, I assume Americans, have cooled on theaters in general. I'm not sure it has to do with COVID or anything at this point, I sort of just feel we don't have much more on the big screen than is going straight to streaming.
I know you kid, but I thought it was pretty good... Streaming has had an effect for quite a while, the pandemic had an effect, and lets not forget several franchises milking their IP to death. Oh...

Streaming has had an effect for quite a while, the pandemic had an effect, and lets not forget several franchises milking their IP to death. Oh and people have less and less extra money.
Barbie comes out post pandemic, is an interesting concept, has a bright visual style which does well while people are feeling pessimistic about the economy and things. I'll also add that it's the kind of movie that you want to see in a theatre as an experience and that comes through in the marketing a bit. Basically I think it's the right movie and at the right time.
My last theater movie was Star Wars 9, right before pandemic. But my previous movie before that was Shut In (2016). I'd be pretty OK going another 3 or 4 years without to a movie theater. There's...
My last theater movie was Star Wars 9, right before pandemic. But my previous movie before that was Shut In (2016). I'd be pretty OK going another 3 or 4 years without to a movie theater. There's just so little a theater has to offer compared to the cons. Literally the only reason I'd have to go is impatience. The movie-going experience at least sucks less now that they have better chairs and dining options in places, but it's still inferior to what I have at home.
I've been considering going to a drive-in theater as I haven't been to one in a while and that's at least a bit nostalgic for me and better for social aspects since you're not bothering people if you talk. Maybe if one of those 40x motion simulator novelty thingies open up in my area I'd consider going to one of those, since that has aspects of an experience I can't get at home.
I went to the drive in and it was fun, but honestly a worse movie watching experience than a normal movie. Since so many new cars have always on daytime running lights that turn on whenever you...

Yeah I didn't end up going, but it was very tempting to go see Barbie or Oppenheimer. Will wait for streaming, since that's what I'm already paying for.

I wouldn’t say Barbie is a family movie
AMC couldn’t make alcoholic beverages themed around it because it was considered a family film.
I think PG is probably an appropriate rating. The film centers around an existential crisis, but there's not much in the sense of sex or violence. Maybe I wouldn't take a 6 year old but probably a 10 year old.
Oh! I haven’t seen it and am surprised to hear that. Could you elaborate?
It’s a PG-13 film with a lot of sexual innuendos and a lot of social commentary. The main audience for this have been women over 25.
