I mean, why would you cast Grande if it isn't? But, I am continually baffled by films not marketing that they are a musical, or have musical numbers. Mean girls downplayed it being a musical, Wonka downplayed that it was a musical, and I would argue that even The Color Purple downplayed it to an extent.

I guess the backlash for an audience being surprised by a musical is less than the number of people who will avoid a musical at all costs...

That is the philosophy producers have. People are less likely to go to a musical willingly but when they go they usually got them hooked. That being said I think this such a famous musical that...

'Wicked' is one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time - up with Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. It's popular enough they only felt the need to include motifs and cues from the show in this trailer.

I know the "Studios don't want to advertise their movies as musicals" thing has become popular online but it's not really applicable in this case because Wicked is so popular.

It’s accurate though as the producers of both Wonka and Mean Girls admitted to it.

Sadly, yes. I was hoping it was going to stay closer to the book than the musical (as the book is one of my all time favorites). But yes.

"This movie has everything: giant musical numbers, big action pieces,” Chu told the audience at CinemaCon 2023 in April, introducing first-look footage. “And using a classic story you all know, The Wizard of Oz."

Tone wise those are so different, I doubt they even considered the rights to the book.

I don't know my man, I am more interested in that movie featuring Arnie comedically having difficulty pronouncing the hard r on words like neighbor.

I don’t know how intentional this was but it’s making me laugh.

Optimistic about this, and at least they referenced the music.

Ugh, it's supposed to be a two-parter. I can't stand that. Just release one 4 h movie later, or a show, or something. Anything but two movies separated by 2-3 years.

Really? Again? That's the fourth time in recent memory, after IT, Dune, and Spiderverse.

In an above thread they talked about how movies these days don't tell you they're musicals because telling people it's a musical is apparently a harder sell than misleading them and having the audience just accept it once they're already watching. This is a similar trend; don't TELL people it's a 4 hour movie upfront, deceive them with a 2 hour movie then say at the end once they're emotionally invested it was really a split up 4 hour movie. It's not just the 2-3 year gap (and inevitable delay) that hurts, it's the deception.

Agreed. Stretching it to be two parts is an unfortunate cash grab.
