I have no anxiety, whatsoever, regarding Dune 2. Denis has undeniably proven his skill in film making and I expect to be as enthralled watching Dune 2 as I was sitting through the first. My only concerns fall on the book, which does end kind of weird by modern story telling standards. I wonder what he'll change about the ending to make it more palatable or if they'll just abandon some storylines entirely.

I think the fact that he was writing the Dune Messiah adaptation while filming and post-producing this movie is a good sign. The changes Villeneuve has made to the story already are all very good, and you can feel he is a true fan of the themes and messages behind the story. I anticipate he would be able to create a more graceful transition between Dune and Dune Messiah.

I have confidence he's up to the challenge and also acknowledge that it'll be a hard job for anyone and my love for the book will make me a harsh judge. But I am so curious how he'll be able to adapt Messiah with the sheer amount of internal dialogue going on.

Here's hoping. I've hated almost every trailer, but I also hated the BR 2049 trailer and it turned out it was great and the trailer was trash. It's an amazing universe and they could do so much with it. The first movie wasn't perfect (yes it was a bit sterile), but it's still up there with all the other great sci fi films, and I trust the director.

Still, it's a tough plot to land, and I almost wonder if I'm just not going to enjoy it as much now that I'm older. It's funny how long things like this take to happen though.

I always wonder how much better blade runner 2049 would've done, if all the people like me had seen a trailer that didn't make them think "oh this is a cash grab".

I get that you still need to make the cool action trailer because yeah those people make up a bigger % of the market, but it blows my mind they don't bother to make one that actually fits the tone.

Must be an interesting job where you only have so much unfinalized footage, a vague sense of the plot, and a direction of tone from your boss that may be accurate, or may be what the studio has calculated to grab the most eyes. I don't think Villeneuve tricked everyone into thinking it was a horror movie, I think an honest trailer wouldn't have gotten as many curious butts in seats.

I don't think the actual movie creators are involved in trailers usually, are they? Especially with Warner Bros. as the studio, it seems like trailers are always done by an unaffiliated other studio that specializes in cutting trailers. That's why the first Suicide Squad movie was infamous—they apparently got the trailer house who cut the popular first trailer to edit the whole movie and it really felt like it.

Exactly. The way the films have been split up, all the really juicy stuff is going to be in Part 2. As far as delivering on plot and character development, this is where things pick up so Part 2 almost has to be better.

What made Part 1 give me optimism about how Part 2 was handled was how the fighting was conducted and visualized, and also that they ended the film on the obvious cliffhanger, with none of the setup that a mini-series would've dangled as a way of hyping up a second season or something. Part 1 is rounded off fairly well and Part 2 can go do all the things it needs to.

That sounds promising. But people were shitting bricks over the first one too, though maybe that was mostly fans, can't remember. Either way, grain of salt etc.

This is kind of a compilation article of reactions from those who have seen the premiere of Dune 2. By all accounts it’s a great film, with reactions ranging from "great movie" to "science fiction masterpiece". I've seen some comparisons to the LOTR films in terms of success at adapting such a (at times) complex story. I enjoyed the first Dune but these reactions certain have me more interested than I was before in seeing the next.

You can tell it's complex by the way that it is.

On one hand it’s complex at times. However, sometimes it is also complex.
