Mikey Madison beat out Demi Moore in Lead Actress to go along with the Anora sweep. And Adrian Brody beat out Timothee Chalamet. I have not gotten 4/4 right in the acting categories since the CODA year.

I'm happy, personally. Anora was my second favorite film of last year and I think it's cool that we have two great Best Picture winners in a row.

I haven't seen Chalamet in A Complete Unknown yet, but I watched The Brutalist recently and Adrien Brody did a really phenomenal job so I'm glad he got the recognition he has long deserved for the energy he puts into his acting. I also liked Felicity Jones' role in The Brutalist. It's still a big deal for people to play people with disabilities. Maybe one day we'll have people with disabilities portray people with disabilities, but anyway, props to her for taking on the role. I also hope that we have more recent Star Wars actors find success in interesting films.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Discovery both had representation in this regard. There should be more, but at least they did it.

I'm surprised A Different Man wasn't in more categories.

I thought Demi Moore had the same narrative as Brendan Fraser. Popcorn actor who no one took seriously, but then gets a role that relies on meta-casting and receives a ton of acclaim. The Substance was even more embraced by the Academy than The Whale was. But alas, the Anora fever was too strong.

still a shame. I hope she gets another go at it. But yeah, Anora was great. I had no idea wtf I was in for going in, but it had everything.

Not sure I’m fully on board with that take. Demi had some heavy swings back in the day. Ghost (though I never watched it, many swooned), Indecent Proposal, GI Jane was pretty great, but it mighta been a bit too on-the-nose as Oscar bait? She was the highest paid female actor in the world at some point.

Brendan Fraser I know only the popcorn stuff. I haven’t seen The Whale. I’m sure it’s amazing, but I’m failing to recall heavy swings from him from back in the day. Not that I’m saying that’s his fault or there were none- I just don’t know them.

I mean- I see all the similarities you mentioned. It definitely is starting to feel like a bit of a formula… I probably just felt the need to defend her because… I mean… I’m a CIS guy of the correct age to have crushed on her back when… and The Substance kinda fried my brain in the theater. I left actually for real damp from perspiration- and just to be clear it was NOT the sexy kind. That movie is intense and insane.

In terms of pure art, I think I might have leaned toward giving it to Demi… but that’s also a really hard sell. Anora captures your heart and has a bit more to say IMO. the Substance is like the dictionary definition of off-putting and is a searing shrieking single note of rage. Anora drives some ideas home with some very good story telling and dialog and delivery.

6 one, half-dozen the other I guess. I think I may have just written myself out of whatever it was I was going to say here. Sorry. I’m going to bed.

Fraser had supporting roles in Gods and Monsters, The Quiet American, and Crash. All of which are Oscar nominated films and one of which won Best Picture. So it’s a really similar standing to Moore.

Maybe it is more akin to Sylvester Stallone. Everyone also thought he was going to win for Creed as a sort of appreciation for his entire career, but it didn't work out like that. The Academy has really changed a lot in recent years with many new members around the world, and apparently they aren't as concerned with giving "sympathy Oscars". Not saying that Demi Moore didn't deserve it for the role itself, she did, but the whole narrative around it was how it was seen as a comeback and redeeming for her entire career.

I still think Moore could have won even without that narrative since The Academy clearly liked The Substance (and the past three make-up winners also won a lead acting Oscar).

Fraser got the sympathy Oscar just recently too. And that was so much based on the narrative people say Colin Farrell should have won.

I saw ghost in theaters and have rewatched. There is a lot to like in that film.

I'm feeling a lot of schadenfreude over how bad Emilia Perez flopped lol, 15 films have received 13 or more nominations in Oscars history and of those, this has the fewest wins. It is 1 of just 6 movies to have lost 11 awards:

Johnny Belinda (1948), with 12 nominations and one win (Best Actress)

Becket (1964), with 12 nominations and one win (Best Adapted Screenplay)

The Turning Point (1977), with 11 nominations and no wins

The Color Purple (1985), with 11 nominations and no wins

The Power of the Dog (2021), with 12 nominations and one win (Best Director)

Emilia Pérez (2024), with 13 nominations and two wins (Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress)

Though it did get my brother-in-law to search "penis to vagina" on youtube and get shocked that medical videos came up before the song 😆
